
COVID-19: Cases increase to 12,757 in ME49/2023

KUALA LUMPUR: Cases of COVID-19 in the country increased to 12,757 cases during the 49th Epidemiological Week which was from December 3 to December 9 last year, compared to 6,796 cases reported in the previous week.
Director-General of Health, Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said, the admission rate of COVID-19 patients, including patients suspected of having COVID-19, to health facilities increased by 1.4 percent compared to the previous week.
During that period, intensive care unit (ICU) bed occupancy also increased by 1.4 percent, while the number of those requiring ventilators also increased by 0.5 percent.
Dr Muhammad Radzi said, a total of 26 new Omicron variants were reported consisting of 21 cases of Variant of Concern and five cases of Variant of Interest.
No new variants have been detected in Malaysia and there is no indication that locally circulating variants are more infectious or cause more severe disease.
Despite the increase in cases of COVID-19, the overall situation in Malaysia is still under control and does not burden existing health facilities.
