India holds the post of President of the G20, the UN Security Council today

NEW DELHI: India assumes the presidency of the G20 and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from today, Sputnik reported.
The G20 is an intergovernmental forum made up of 19 countries and the European Union. The forum accounts for 85 percent of the global gross domestic product, 75 percent of international trade and two-thirds of the world's population. The establishment of the G20 aims to address major issues related to the global economy including cases
international financial stability, climate change mitigation and sustainable development.
India holds the post from Dec 1 until Nov 30, 2023 and will host about 200 group meetings at different levels, over the next year, with the main event of the G20 summit taking place in the country's capital, New Delhi from September 9-10. 2023.
India is also a member of the G20 Troika which includes Indonesia, the previous president of the G20 and Brazil who will take over the presidency of the group at the end of 2023.
Earlier in the year, Indian officials stated that India's priorities were for global economic growth, public debt issues and food and energy security, throughout the presidency of the group.
On the same day, India also holds the presidency of the UN Security Council until the end of the month, the second time New Delhi has become the UNSC president since August 2021.
During his tenure, India will host several meetings on counter-terrorism efforts and the renewal of multilateral approaches to global challenges, with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar chairing them.
The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members including Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and the United States who hold veto power and 10 non-permanent members elected for a two-year term.
Over the years, India has sought a permanent seat on the Security Council along with Brazil, Germany and Japan. – BERNAMA
