GE-15: BN women will continue to insist that the quota of 30 female candidates be implemented

Kuala Lumpur: Barisan Nasional (BN) Women's Deputy Chairman, Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim admitted that many members of the party were disappointed after the top leadership failed to keep their promise to ensure 30 percent of female candidates in the 15th General Election (GE-15).

She, who is also the Umno Women's Deputy Chief, said that it may be too late to change the scenario because the nominations have come in today, marking the start of the nationwide campaign.

"But it is still not too late for us to keep pushing for the promise to be fulfilled at the state election level for the remaining six states that have not yet dissolved their state legislatures.

"Women will continue to make sure that this demand is heard and then fulfilled by the highest leadership. Make sure that the seat is suitable and safe to win. It's not just a catch-all," she said in a statement today.

She said, personally, the request for the 30 percent quota is not based on blind emotions but based on solid statistics that there are 123 out of 222 parliamentary constituencies dominated by women voters.

"More than that, it is in line with the 'trend' and 'demand' of the world, especially Asia, to increase the efforts of women's involvement in policy making, not only in the private sector but also in the government and national legislators," he said.

Norliza also congratulated the women candidates, including Puteri, and their component partners throughout the country in order to ensure BN's victory.

"God willing, I will try to be present to give support and help as much as possible during this 14-day period," he said.
