This takes the cake: L/Kpl Norashikin and L/Kpl Mohammad Zaki cutting the wedding cake during the mass wedding event at the Pulapol centre in Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR: As children they used to play together in the same village in Parit Sulong, Johor, but as they grew up, they went their separate ways to chase after their dreams.

L/Kpl Norashikin Abdullah joined the police force while L/Kpl Mohammad Zaki Firdaus Nadirin enrolled in the armed forces due to their love and passion for the security forces.

But the couple was fated to reunite after losing contact for years.

In March, through Facebook,

L/Kpl Norashikin managed to get in touch with her childhood friend.

“Our relationship soon grew steady and there was no turning back. Somehow, we knew deep inside that we are destined to be together.

“Our engagement was in July and now we are married, ” she told reporters yesterday.

The couple, along with eight others, took part in a mass wedding ceremony organised by the police and Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd at the Police Training Centre.

L/Kpl Norashikin recalled that other children used to tease her and L/Kpl Mohammad Zaki, saying they were “inseparable”.

“We were fond of each other from young. Despite being separated later due to our studies and work, we defied the odds to be back together again.

“This time, it is for life. We are happy to start a family, ” said L/Kpl Norashikin, who is with the Seremban police district headquarters’ management division.

L/Kpl Mohammad Zaki said he was honoured to be part of the mass wedding, representing the armed forces.

“My only goal was to marry her. It is certainly a bonus to be part of this ceremony, ” he added.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador congratulated all the couples.

He singled out L/Kpl Norashikin and her husband, saying their marriage could foster better relations between the police and the armed forces.

“It is certainly a wonderful occasion today. It is even greater when the couples come from two different security agencies, ” he said in his speech.

The event was a joint effort between the police force and Bank Muamalat.

“We are grateful to the bank for donating RM100,000, so that the event can be a reality.

“This is the second year of our collaboration, ” said the country’s top cop.
