KUALA LUMPUR: A pair of suspected snatch thieves tried to flee from the police only to be arrested when they crashed into one of the patrolling unit's motorcycles.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said the unit led by the Cheras police station chief were patrolling around Taman Segar when they stopped the two men aged 24 and 30 at around 7.15pm on Sunday (Oct 20).

"We gave chase after they started accelerating and they later crashed into one of our motorcycles," he said on Monday (Oct 21).

Police later found that the men, a burger stall assistant and a restaurant worker, had three necklaces, two mobile phones and a bag with them.

Both men also tested positive for methamphetamine and have been remanded for five days until Oct 25.

Between them, they have 25 criminal records - nine of which are drug offences - and are believed to be behind a spate of snatch thefts in the area.

"With the arrest of these suspects, we believe we are able to solve a few robberies and snatch theft cases in Cheras," ACP Mohamed Mokhsein said.

The case is being investigated for gang robbery under Section 395 of the Penal Code and drug use under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
