PETALING JAYA: Malaysia came back from 2-1 down to beat Indonesia 3-2 in their opening Group G World Cup 2022/Asia Cup 2023 qualifying match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday (Sept 5).

In the first-half, Indonesia took the lead through striker Beto Goncalves in the 11th minute.

Needing a game changer, Malaysia brought on winger Mohamadou Sumareh in the 35th minute and he made an impact just a minute later by scoring the equaliser.

However, that didn't last after Beto scored his second of the match in the 38th minute.

In the second half, Syafiq Ahmad scored Harimau Malaya’s equaliser in the 66th minute, but the match was marred by crowd trouble and had to be stopped for ten minutes until police intervened.

However, Malaysia never lost momentum, and the Harimau Malaya got their winner through Sumareh in the 96th minute.

Malaysia will next face the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday (Sept 10) at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
