RapidKL bus driver in Ampang road rampage was high on drugs, say police (updated)


KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The RapidKL bus driver whose bus crashed into seven vehicles in the Ampang area, was found to be driving under the influence of drugs.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the driver tested positive for metamphetamine.

"During the incident, the man was driving under the influence of drugs ... this case is also being investigated by the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters under the Selangor contingent.

"We will also check whether the 32-year-old bus driver has a past criminal record involving drugs," he told reporters after attending the launch of a crime prevention operation for cadets of the Police Training Centre here Friday.

Mazlan said the case was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum jail term of five years and a fine, if convicted.

It may also will disqualify the suspect from obtaining a driving licence for two years.

In the incident at about 8pm Thursday (Aug 16), seven vehicles were severely damaged after the bus rammed into them.

It is believed that the suspect was trying to escape an accident in front of the Risda building in Jalan Ampang here.
