JOHOR BARU: Johor police have arrested 13 individuals, including one who had escaped to Singapore, for allegedly kidnapping two teenagers here.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm Kamaluddin Kassim said that on July 18, police received a report from a family who said they had received a ransom demand after their 18-year-old son was abducted in Skudai.
"On Aug 19, we received another report from a man at Paloh, Kluang, who said his 18-year-old son had also been kidnapped. A ransom had also been demanded in the case," he said in a statement here on Wednesday (Aug 22).
SAC Kamaluddin said police set up a special task force to investigate the cases.
Following this, police arrested 10 suspects, four at a budget hotel along Jalan Wong Ah Fook here at 11.30am and the remaining six at a house in Yong Peng at around 12.30pm on Tuesday (Aug 21), he added.
Based on the information gleaned, SAC Kamaluddin said police raided a house in Pagoh on Tuesday (Aug 21) at 11.30pm and arrested two more male suspects. They also managed to rescue one of the victims who had been locked up in one of the rooms.
"With the help from our Singapore counterparts, we were able to arrest one more suspect who had fled there.
"Following interrogation of the suspects, police recovered burnt skeletal remains at a dumpsite in Pagoh," he said, adding that a DNA test has been carried out to find out if the remains belong to the other kidnap victim.
SAC Kamaluddin said the suspects, between 19 and 39, will be remanded until Sept 1 to aid investigations under Section 3 of the Kidnap Act 1961 and Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
