Stray dogs were found dead from suspected poisoning since July 24 near Elmina Garden.

ANOTHER four stray dogs including two puppies were found dead earlier Wednesday (Aug 8) morning near Elmina Garden, U16 Shah Alam.

One of the adult dogs and two puppies, as well as three birds, were found near the Elmina roundabout while another dog was found in the residential area near Elmina East.

This is the second reported incident involving dead strays after 11 dogs were found dead from suspected poisoning since July 24.

Kelvin Raj, one of the founders of Dogs of Denai Alam (Doda), a dog lover group, said he found a mother and her puppy by the Elmina roundabout on his way to work at 8.30am.

According to him, one of the puppies was found dead next to a packet of food.

Kelvin said there were residents who would regularly leave food out for the dogs.

However, a resident said that some of the food packets seen that morning were unfamiliar in the area.

“We suspect that the dogs died some time between late last night and the early hours of today,” he added.

Kelvin believed it could be the act of the same person who killed the dogs earlier.

“The place the dogs were found is not within any residential area so it does not make sense for the suspect to come out this far to poison the dogs,” he added.

According to Kelvin, he had spoken to some of the workers in the area who confirmed that the dogs did not pose a problem or create a menace.

The workers claimed that the dogs came to eat their food and Kelvin said the dogs were, in fact, afraid of humans.

The Veterinary Department has collected the bodies of the dogs and the food packets as evidence.

Shah Alam City councillor Muhammad Shakir Ameer Mohideen said residents alerted him after finding the dogs.

“We believe these dogs have been poisoned as well. They were found with foam in the mouth,” he said.

Shakir also said that the Selangor Veterinary Department had begun investigations on the earlier incident.

The department is investigating the case under Section 31(1) Welfare Act 2015. If found guilty the perpetrators can be fined not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000 or face a jail term of not more than three years or both.

Shakir also said that the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is in the midst of finding a more sustainable solution in reducing strays at residential areas.

“We are against any form of cruelty towards animals. We welcome the Vet Department’s attention on this matter and we hope action will be taken once the investigation is completed,” he added.

Shakir said they are in the midst of setting up a shelter for the stray dogs.

He said he had proposed that the dogs be adopted by factories or companies as guard dogs as well to ensure the strays find a good home.

Elmina has long had a history with stray dogs in the area.

Although the dogs reportedly kept to themselves, residents were uncomfortable with their presence.
