PETALING JAYA: An intoxicated retiree has been remanded for brandishing a gun after he fell and hurt his head at a mall in Bandar Utama here on Wednesday (Aug 8).

The commotion caused panic and rumours began to float around social media claiming that a man had been shot there.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din said they were alerted about the case at around 7.10pm on Wednesday.

"We got a tip-off that a man had fallen and hurt his head in a drunken state at a restaurant there.

"He took out a gun while looking for his friend while paramedics were tending to his wound," he said when contacted on Thursday (Aug 9).

He said a police car and motorcycle patrol unit were dispatched to the scene.

The man was arrested and the semi-automatic gun, a magazine and bullets were seized.

"The 61-year-old was taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for medical treatment and has been remanded for further investigations.

"Checks revealed that the suspect had a permit for the gun he was carrying," he said adding that police had taken a statement from the suspect's friend.

ACP Mohd Zani added that the case was being investigated as criminal intimidation."The social media posts were fake. No shots were fired at any time at the scene," he said.
