KUALA LUMPUR: Crimebuster Comm Datuk A. Thaiveegan (pic) is back in Penang – this time as the top cop.

Thaiveegan, who was Penang deputy chief police officer from 2013 until last year, will take over as the state’s CPO from Jan 1.

Comm Thaiveegan, who is currently Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) deputy director, said he was grateful for the opportunity to helm the Penang Contingent.

He will take over from Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye who is retiring at the end of the month.

“I intend to do my best to helm the police force there just as Comm Chuah has,” he said.

Comm Thaiveegan is known for his tough stand against gangsterism and has been outspoken on the issue especially when he served as the Selangor and Penang deputy police chief. He was Selangor deputy CPO from 2010-2013.

He is currently the highest ranking Indian police officer in the force besides current Federal CCID director Comm Datuk Amar Singh.

The 58-year-old joined the police force in 1985 when he was 27.

His experience in the force includes being in the CID, Special Branch and CCID.

Comm Thaiveegan, who hails from Ipoh, is a graduate in criminology from Universiti Malaya.

Federal Integrity and Standard Compliance Department deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Abd Rahim Jaafar will take over as the Federal CCID deputy director.
