Sisters lose over RM100,000 to prolific ‘Datuk
GEORGE TOWN: Two sisters fear they have been cheated out of more than RM100,000 after loaning the sum to a Datuk, who was the president of a reputable service club.
They claimed he had been out of reach since late last month. To make matters worse, more than 10 friends whom they introduced to the 38-year-old man also claimed they loaned money to him to the tune of over RM1mil.
Housewife Lina Oon, 44, and her sister Na Na, 38, along with two others, have lodged seven police reports against the man since November after their calls went unanswered and they failed to locate him at his home in Gelugor.
Na Na said she trusted the man because he was allegedly wealthy and well-acquainted, and was the chairman and former president of the service club.
“We fear that he has fled with our money. We went to his home and his guard told us he had moved out,” said Na Na during a press conference held at the Pantai Jerejak Gerakan service centre yesterday.
She said her brother-in-law had also registered a company with the Datuk with the intention of hosting a charity beauty pageant.
However, the company was left under the care of the Datuk by his brother-in-law.
“We are fearful that he will misuse the company’s name. We want the police to step in after our efforts to locate him failed,” Na Na said.
Lina said she and Na Na even paid for all his expenses and shopping overseas when he joined their family for a holiday in October, amounting to RM35,000, after he claimed to have forgotten his wallet.
Lina said the sum, coupled with several loans she and her sister lent to the Datuk after he claimed that he was in financial difficulty, amounted to more than RM100,000.
Also present at the press conference was the Datuk’s private assistant, who wanted to be known only as Chung, 22.
Chung claimed the Datuk owed him two months’ salary.
Tang Song Hai, 78, from Persatuan Penganut Dewa Nam Tao Cheh Khoon in Sungai Dua, claimed at the press conference that the Datuk had two of their receipt books to gather sponsors and donations for a lucky draw event, which he feared would be misused.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said police would investigate the case.
