KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian man suspected of having links to the Islamic State (IS) was arrested at Karachi airport in Pakistan on Friday. A Pakistani media portal, tribune.com.pk, reported that the man was nabbed as he was attempting to board a Malaysia-bound flight via the Jinnah International Airport.

It said that authorities seized four guns, eight magazines and 70 bullets concealed in his baggage and shoes. The suspect was immediately brought to the airport police station and probed by the intelligence agencies who were trying to ascertain as to why he attempted the brazen smuggling of weapons and ammunition through the airport, the report added.

A picture of the bespectacled-suspect arrested was also posted on the portal, showing him in his jacket and a “kopiah” on his head, as well as a picture of four black guns, magazines and bullets in two trays. His passport image has been circulated on the social media, revealing his age as 20 years old. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed the arrest, saying that the Pakistani security agencies had informed him of the arrest yesterday.

“The suspect is still being detained in Pakistan. We will work closely with our counterparts there. We will also request to Pakistan to deport him here so the police can arrest and investigate him but that will take time as we have to follow procedures,” said Fuzi when contacted. He added that preliminary checks here revealed that the suspect, who hails from Serian, Sarawak, had links to IS. © New Straits Times
