MALACCA: Videos of a caretaker abusing residents of an old folks' home in Klebang Besar here have gone viral on social media.

One 11-second video clip showed an elderly woman being grabbed from the back of her shirt by a man who then slapped her repeatedly as she tried to dodge the attack.

Another video, also 11 seconds-long, depicted the same man sitting on a bed while scolding at an elderly man while smacking him.

A report was lodged by a former employee of the old folks' home at the Batang Tiga police station at 12.45pm yesterday.

The staff claimed that she stopped working at the old folks' home after being unable to stomach the caretaker's abusive behaviour.

"I decided to quit my job on Oct 1 as I could not tolerate the owner's rough treatment of the elderly.

"In the period I was working at the old folks home, I have seen the caretaker hitting, insulting and also selling off items that were donated to the home meant for the residents," said the 29-year-old former staff, who declined to be named.

The case has caught the attention of Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron, who called on relevant authorities to enforce strict regulations related to the care of the elderly at the old folks' home.

"The Social Welfare Department has been instructed to investigate this case. If there is any misconduct, the management must be brought to court," he said.
