France 5-2 Iceland: Olivier Giroud scores twice as Euro 2016 hosts cruise to victory to set up mouthwatering semi-final with Germany

  • Olivier Giroud fired France ahead on 12 minutes after an assist from Blaise Matuidi against Iceland
  • Paul Pogba doubled the Euro 2016 hosts on 19 minutes with a bullet header from Antoine Griezmann's corner
  • France made it 3-0 just before half-time when Dimitri Payet drilled home from outside the box with his left foot
  • Griezmann added a fourth with a sumptuous chip to give Didier Deschamps' side a 4-0 lead at half-time
  • Kolbeinn Sigthorsson pulled one back for Iceland on 56 minutes but Giroud grabbed his second three minutes later

This will have made for uncomfortable viewing in Iceland and won't have been an awful lot better for the English, either.
Iceland, the conquerors of Roy Hodgson's team in the last 16, were made to look like the rather limited football nation they are here at Stade de France. The host nation scored five - four coming in the first half - and could easily have had more.
It was a sad end for Iceland. From the moment they drew their opening game with Portugal, they have brought much to Euro 2016. France will not forget their contribution and nor will it forget the fantastic visiting supporters who sang to the end in the rain on Sunday night.

Now that Iceland have gone, though, we must ask once again how on earth they beat England. If the sheer scale of that defeat in Nice a week ago had escaped anybody, this result underlines it gravely.
France didn't really have to work that hard to score against Iceland on Sunday night.
Didier Deschamps' team picked them off with goals from Oliver Giroud, Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann in a first half that saw them have five shots on target and score with four.
Briefly Iceland rallied to at least score a goal through Kolbeinn Sigthorsson at the start of the second half but almost immediately Giroud scored his second, rising unchecked to nod in a free kick from Payet.
Iceland really were desperately vulnerable to set pieces here. Maybe England would have discovered this in Nice had they managed to keep any of their own free-kicks and corners within the field of play.
France had started nervously a week ago against Ireland in Lyon. They conceded an early goal and didn't really recover until the second half.
Iceland will have been aware of this, aware that if they could get up on their opponents early then things may go their way.
Certainly they started with some intent, not looking to sit back and slowly find a way in to the game. The first two chances were theirs. The first, in the third minute, came on the back of determination from Swansea's Gylfi Sigurdsson. His dynamism saw him work an opening on the edge of the penalty area and his low shot was gathered by Hugo Lloris.
Two minutes later the route was more direct as a chipped ball saw Johnann Gudmundsson run in to space and he would have found himself clear on Lloris had his first touch been a little better.
It was warning enough for France, though. A little like Wales in the other half of the draw, they have grown in confidence as the tournament has gone on.
France had actually started quite slowly, their passing not fluent. One shot from Dimitry Payet had forced Hannes Halldorsson into a routine save in the sixth minute but when France sprang forward to take the lead soon after, it was a goal that came from nowhere.

Giroud's run off the shoulders of the Iceland central defenders was a decent one and his left-foot finish between the goalkeeper's legs was struck true.
But it was a malfunctioning Iceland offside trap that made the largest contribution to the opening, Giroud running unchecked on to Blaise Matuidi's pass.
A goal to the good, it was possible to feel some of the pressure lift from France and they began to play more fluently. Payet in particular was drifting in to good positions in a free role and he was involved in a decent move in the 20th minute that led to a French corner

There was nothing special about the subsequent delivery but the way Pogba made the ball his own was extraordinary.
His marker, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, had spotted Pogba's run and gone with him but the 23-year-old's sheer physical power made the difference as he simply jumped higher and with more strength to head the ball in at the far post. It felt like the definitive moment of the game and, with hindsight, it probably was. Iceland did trouble the French defence at set pieces. With Deschamps giving a debut to Barcelona central defender Samuel Umtiti after losing Adil Rami to suspension, France did occasionally look vulnerable and Iceland may have scored when Kolbeinn Sigthorsson flicked on a long throw in the 25th minute.
Centre forward Bodvarsson - he who had been out-jumped by Pogba for the second goal - was the man who the chance fell to, but he couldn't divert the ball past Lloris. He probably should have been braver and gone with his head.
However, for Gudmundsson and his Iceland team-mates there was a glimmer of hope after half-time when Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored

Iceland remained in the contest until just before half time but two quick goals saw them off.
West Ham's Payet scored his third of the tournament in the 43rd minute and again the move began innocuously. Bacary Sagna's cross from the right seemed a little overhit but it wasn't cleared properly.
And when Griezmann slipped the ball back to Payet he cleverly made space to his left before pulling the ball across his body and into the corner past Halldorsson's outstretched left hand.
For the first time in three weeks, Icelandic heads dropped. Only a minute later, a pass forward from Pogba was helped on its way by Giroud and Griezmann ran clear to score with a sumptuous lob.
Three minutes later though, France were celebrating once more when Giroud scored his second and their fifth goal of the night

It was a goal that said everything about the two teams - one playing with rare confidence, the other shell-shocked.
Iceland scored their first goal in the 56th minute, Sigthorsson reaching a low cross from Sigurdsson before Umtiti to poke the ball in at the near post.
Once again though, Iceland simply switched off and only a few minutes later Payet swung a routine free-kick in to the area and Giroud leaped highest among the bodies to score his second goal.
Iceland were to have the last word as former Chelsea and Bolton forward Eidur Gudjohnsen came on to play a part in the move that allowed Birkir Bjarnason to head past Loris at the far post with six minutes left.
