250 Syrian refugees to arrive on Msian shores before Ramadan
SEPANG: About 250 Syrian refugees are expected to be brought into Malaysia, tentatively before Ramadan.
Humanitarian Care Malaysia Bhd (MyCare) chief executive officer Kamarul Zaman Shaharul Anwar said the Islamic Medical Association Malaysia Response & Relief Team (Imaret) would conduct the health screenings of the selected refugees.
He said Syria Care would bring in about 150 Syrian refugees from Jordan and MyCare would bring in about 100 from Lebanon.
The refugees, he said, would comprise all groups including children, single mothers and families.
"At the same time, relevant government agencies will do the security screenings before these refugees can get the green light to enter Malaysia.
“We are in the midst of discussing the matter with the Home Ministry," he told reporters before sending off a seven-member relief team to Lebanon today.
The team, comprising mostly medical practitioners, are expected to treat more than 2,000 Syrians at three refugee camps namely the Al Badawi camp, Nahr Al-Barid camp and Beqaa camp.
The mission leader Associate Professor Dr Mohamed Ikram Mohamed Salleh of Imaret said the team would provide among others medical aid, dental treatment, and psychosocial support to the refugees at the three camps.
The aid worth RM175,000 will also include 1,000 food packs and funding for about 100 orphans from their sponsors in Malaysia.
