FTKL JPAM To Handle Disaster Management Tasks Effective Today
PUTRAJAYA: Effective today, the disaster management tasks for the three federal territories - Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan - will be handled by the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (FTKL) Malaysian Civil Defence Department (JPAM).
Federal Territories Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Adnan Md Ikshan said, prior to this, the disaster management tasks for the federal territories were under the FTKL National Security Council (NSC).
"We hope the handing over of duties will facilitate the planning of natural disaster management, especially for floods or flash floods in the federal territories," he told a press conference after witnessing the handing over of duties at his office, here Monday.
FTKL NSC was represented by its State Security secretary Mohd Anuar Ismail while FTKL JPAM by its deputy director Mohd Rosman Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Mohd Rosman said as the secretariat, FTKL JPAM would be involved in planning, coordinating and overseeing the implementation of operations during disasters and to provide training and awareness to the community in facing disasters and also reducing risk during disasters.
Mohd Rosman said the department was also responsible for giving advice and views to the Federal Territories Ministry secretary-general regarding the action that could be taken during disasters.
At present, the FTKL JPAM has about 30,000 volunteers who are ready to be mobilised at any time, he said.
He said FTKL JPAM offices in Putrajaya, Sentul, Cheras, Dang Wangi and Labuan were also capable of deploying up to 1,000 personnel within two hours to the location of disasters.
