MTV WORLD STAGE LIVE IN MALAYSIA 2013

MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2013

American singer and songwriter Robin Thicke and hip-hop group Far East Movement ignited the annual MTV World Stage concert at Sunway Lagoon Resort here yesterday.

The concert, which was in its fifth year, went on from 7pm to 11pm.
It also featured South Korean group Exo and Malaysian hip-hop artiste Joe Flizzow.
The concert is a global series telecast to more than 550 million households.
About 15,000 people attended this year.
Last year's concert, held at the same venue, was attended by a record 18,000 people.
Justin Bieber, Jay Park, Kara and Malaysia's Mizz Nina were the highlights last year.

Fiercely loyal K-pop fans were again out in full force at MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia. Following the 2012 edition’s successful double bill of Jay Park and KARA, the Malaysian leg of MTV’s global music series welcomed EXO (pictured above) – a 12-member Korean boy band dressed in matching boarding school uniforms – this year.

Joe Flizzow

Performing second after local hip-hop luminary Joe Flizzow (whose brief set brought us energetic renditions of ‘Untukmu’, ‘Havoc’ and ‘All Around the World’ as well as cameos from Altimet and Ila Damiaa), EXO had their largely tween girl fanbase singing along overzealously to ‘Wolf’, ‘History’, the One Direction-esque ‘365’ and ‘Growl’.

The rain had petered out by the time Far East Movement arrived onstage to rapturous applause, but plenty of visibly contented EXO devotees had already left Surf Beach before the first note of ‘Ain’t Coming Down’ was belted out. The lively Kev Nish and co paid no heed to the crowd’s dwindling numbers and went on to showcase dance hits ‘Like a G6’ and ‘Rocketeer’, which was inexplicably remixed with Alicia Keys’s ‘No One’.

Far East Movement

The rave-like party atmosphere that embodied the orange jumpsuit-clad Far East Movement’s slightly long-drawn set, which included Prohgress doing a round of crowd surfing, gave way to a protracted wait before headliner and final act Robin Thicke’s eagerly awaited appearance. Even when Thicke finally made his way to the stage, a ten-minute technical delay limited the sharply dressed Los Angeles soulman to a short a capella teaser of ‘Blurred Lines’.

Once the technical issues were sorted, an apologetic Thicke returned to showcase the tantalising melisma and silky smooth falsetto that have propelled him to superstardom this year. The lesser known ‘Take It Easy on Me’, ‘Feel Good’, ‘Shakin’ it 4 Daddy’ and ‘Give It 2 You’ merely served as precursors to ‘Blurred Lines’, 2013’s biggest radio anthem that predictably elicited wild cheers from the remaining revellers.

Robin Thicke

A twerking Miley Cyrus stole the headlines the last time Thicke graced an MTV-branded music show, but the 36-year-old was not to be denied this time around. No drama, no controversy – just Thicke and around 15,000 fans chanting ‘hey, hey, hey’ into the night.
