BUTTERWORTH: Police arrested 28 local men believed to be involved in a riot armed with machetes in Jalan Raja Uda, here, yesterday.
All the suspects aged between 17 and 51 years old were arrested in several separate locations around the North Seberang Perai district by members of the Penang Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ).
Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Asri Shafie said the police launched the raid after receiving a report from the public regarding the incident.
"The initial investigation found that the cause of the incident was due to an argument and provocation among them.
"The police managed to track down all those involved before arresting 28 men along with the case items used in the incident. All of them were then remanded for further action," he said in a statement on Saturday.

According to Mohd Asri, his party is also actively tracking the remains of other suspects who were also involved in the incident.
"People who have any information about this incident are asked to contact the Investigating Officer of the ASP Nasrina Darus case at 04-5762222 or any of the nearest police stations to assist with the investigation," he said.
The case is investigated according to Section 148 of the Penal Code, which is rioting using weapons.
Earlier, a short four-second video went viral on social media showing a group of men armed with machetes rioting by damaging a vehicle in front of a premise near here.
