HULU SELANGOR: A man was jailed for a month and fined RM3,000 by the Kuala Kubu Baharu Magistrate's Court here today, for displaying a picture of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim during the Kuala Kubu Baharu State Assembly by-election (PRK) campaign. (KKB).

Judge Siti Fatimah Talib, who acted as Magistrate, handed down the sentence on P. Ramasamy, 66, after the man pleaded guilty after the charges were read.

The court ordered Ramasamy, who is self-employed, to serve the jail term from the date he was arrested on May 4 and will be jailed for 10 months if he fails to pay the fine.

Ramasamy is accused of committing the act and carrying a Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner using a four-wheel drive vehicle, with a tendency to develop feelings of hostility between different groups of voters in the KKB by-election, to encourage any voter to vote for the PH candidate.

The act was done around Taman Bukit Bunga near here at about 5.40pm, May 4.

The charge is under Section 4(A)1 of the Election Offenses Act 1954, which provides for a prison sentence of not more than five years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both.

The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Asmah Che Wan while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

Earlier, Ramasamy in his appeal apologized to the court in addition to asking for a lighter sentence, on the grounds that he did not know that the action was wrong.

Asmah, on the other hand, begged the court to hand down a befitting sentence as a lesson not only to the accused, but also to Malaysians so that such incidents do not happen again.

"I request that a severe sentence be given to the accused taking into account the case and the offense committed involving and insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This is a sensitive issue and can anger all Malaysians," he said.

Yesterday, Bernama reported that the police arrested two men and confiscated a four-wheel drive vehicle for displaying a picture of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim during the KKB by-election campaign.
