JAKARTA – Prabowo Subianto was officially announced as the new President of Indonesia after defeating his two rivals, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, Al Jazeera broadcasting station reported today.
Prabowo and the future vice president, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, won the majority of votes in the Presidential election (Pilpres), last February 14 with 59 percent of the vote.
It is equivalent to 96 million votes, said the Chairman of the General Election Commission, Hasyim Asy'ari, late yesterday.
Anies got almost 41 million votes or 25 percent of the total, while Ganjar got 27 million votes or more than 16 percent.
Prabowo, who is a former special forces commander, has been accused of human rights violations.
He will take over the position of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who is Gibran's father, this October after a transition period.
The 72-year-old Figura 'swept clean' in the Presidential Election by promising to continue Jokowi's policies by using the President's popularity and social media platforms such as TikTok to gain the support of young voters in Indonesia.
Previously, Prabowo had already celebrated his victory in the presidential election after the unofficial vote count showed that he was significantly ahead of his rivals.
"We should not be arrogant. We should not be proud, we still need to be humble. This victory must be a victory for all Indonesians," he said at the time in a speech broadcast on national television.
