PETALING JAYA: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Wong Kah Woh slammed the police today for threatening to arrest him when he attempted to enter Parliament to conduct a hearing, saying it was “uncalled for”.

Wong said he told the officer on duty that he was the PAC chairman and informed him of the 10.30am meeting with the health ministry over vaccine procurement.

However, he was initially denied entry despite producing a letter, signed by the Dewan Rakyat secretary, on the hearing.

“The police even threatened me with arrest if I did not leave in two minutes,” he said in a statement.

Wong said PAC members were subsequently allowed in after Parliament staff intervened.

“Such action (by the police) was uncalled for and it is a threat to our role as PAC members,” he said.

Earlier this morning, police blocked off roads leading to Parliament House where opposition MPs were to hold a protest against the postponement of today’s special sitting, but subsequently congregated at Dataran Merdeka.

Police were seen turning away cars and motorcyclists at the exits off Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar.

One officer told FMT they were “blocked for everyone”, with an MP confirming that even they were not allowed past the police tape.

The special sitting that was supposed to be held today was postponed indefinitely on Saturday after Covid-19 cases were detected on Thursday.

Yesterday, Wong said special select committee meetings would proceed despite health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s recommendation to suspend all Parliament meetings for two weeks over the high risk of Covid-19 infections.

Health minister Dr Adham Baba also attended today’s meeting.
