Meeting confirmed by Pejuang Deputy President
Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri has been in touch with Pejuang chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in an effort to gain support to become the new prime minister, according to Pejuang deputy president Marzuki Yahya.
Confirming the matter, Marzuki said Ismail met Mahathir at the former prime minister's house in Seri Kembangan, Selangor around fourpm this afternoon.
The meeting lasted for 30 minutes, he said.
However, said Marzuki, Mahathir's answer to Ismail was the same as that given to DAP Organizing Secretary Anthony Loke and Amanah President Mohamad Sabu who also contacted him a few weeks ago on behalf of PKR President Anwar Ibrahim.
"What Tun said to Ismail Sabri is the same as (to) Loke and Mat Sabu.
"The main focus of PEJUANG is the country's overwhelming problems - Covid -19, economic, social and educational," he said
"What Tun asked for is for theMPN Council to be established," he added.
Marzuki said it was not strange for any party to ask for support from Mahathir and he would receive them as guests.
Mahathir consistently proposed the establishment of the MPN A Mageran-like body that governed the country after the May 13, 1969 tragedy until 1971.
At that time, Parliament was suspended and Mageran which consisted of eight members administered with emergency powers.
However, Mahathir's proposed MPN did not suspend Parliament.
"Pejuang's priority is the health and economic problems that are so significant faced by the people, not about the question of electing a prime minister.
"Even if we elect the prime minister, if we are not able to solve the problems of the country and the people, there is no point either," he added.
Earlier, PKR Information Chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin told reporters in Petaling Jaya that he had received information that Ismail - who was in an effort to gain support - had contacted Mahathir.
He, however, said there were no further details on the matter.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has hinted that he will resign tomorrow.
Muhyiddin lost his majority after 15 Umno lawmakers - led by president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - withdrew their support.for him.
