PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia saw 11 deaths due to Covid-19 in a 24-hour span, just one figure short of the country’s daily record for fatalities caused by this virus.

The most number of Covid-19 deaths in a day was recorded exactly a month ago on Nov 3.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 11 deaths involved seven women and five men – all Malaysians.

“With the addition of 11 Covid-19 death cases, this brings the total fatalities in the country to 376, or 0.54% of the tally of cases, ” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement.

The deaths involved individuals aged between 50 and 81, with most suffering from comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Five of the cases were reported at the Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor, while two were at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan, Sabah. Another two of the fatalities were reported at Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom, Kluang, in Johor.

The remaining deaths were reported at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Baru in Kelantan, and Hospital Tuanku Jaafar in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

Dr Noor Hisham said there are 116 patients currently battling the virus in Intensive Care Units (ICU), with 46 of them requiring ventilator support.

The number of daily Covid-19 cases made a return to four figures, with 1,075 more new infections confirmed by the Health Ministry yesterday.

Three of the cases were imported infections, while the others were locally transmitted.

Selangor is the state with the highest number of new cases with 459, followed by Sabah with 310 and Johor, 78.

Since the pandemic began, Malaysia has recorded 69,095 Covid-19 cases.

There are 10,802 individuals currently being treated for Covid-19 across the country.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 948 Covid-19 patients have been discharged yesterday, making the total recoveries up to 57,917.

The Health Ministry has detected four new Covid-19 clusters – three in Sabah and one in Selangor.

The Monsoon cluster in Petaling, Selangor, has 19 cases and its index case tested positive after developing symptoms.

The Perdana Enam cluster in Lahad Datu so far has 25 cases while the Jalan Kubota cluster in Tawau has 14 confirmed cases.

The Jalan Kilang cluster in Lahad Datu has 24 cases linked to it and they were detected from a Covid-19 screening exercise conducted on workers of a factory.

Dr Noor Hisham said with the addition of the new clusters, there are now 184 active clusters in the country.
