PETALING JAYA: Deputy Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay has been appointed the new Johor police chief.
The Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) head will replace Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din as Johor's top cop.
Inspector-General of Police Secretariat corporate communications head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Asmawati Ahmad said Comm Mohd Kamaruddin will be transferred to the Bukit Aman Management Department (Administration).
"Datuk Ayob will be promoted to the rank of commissioner.
"The transfer and promotion will be in effect on March 6," she said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 6).
DCP Ayob has been in the forefront of Bukit Aman's efforts against terrorism for several years.
Hailing from Pendang, Kedah, DCP Ayob led the E8 in combating terrorism. He was instrumental in the division's success in thwarting various terror plots and nabbing more than 500 militants since February, 2013.

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has denied that the sudden transfer of Johor police chief Mohd Kamaruddin Md Din to an administrative position in Kuala Lumpur is linked to allegations of police inaction during a rowdy protest against Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in Ulu Tiram last week.
But Hamid admitted it was difficult to deny such a speculation, as the change was considered major.
“It’s up to you if you want to make a connection to the incident,” he told repoters at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here.
He said the move to appoint Bukit Aman’s anti-terrorism chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay to helm Johor police was because he had been in his current position for “too long”.
“If I allow him (Ayob) there for another one or two months, people will call him a terrorist because that has been his only job,” he said.
Yesterday, it was announced that Kamaruddin would be moved to the administrative department at Bukit Aman’s management division, effective next month.
The decision comes almost a week after allegations that police had stood by when an abusive mob gathered outside a restaurant in Ulu Tiram on Jan 31, Syed Saddiq, who is also the youth and sports minister, was attending an event with PPBM Youth members.
A PPBM Youth exco member had claimed that the minister’s political secretary approached some policemen nearby to ask for assistance but nothing happened.
“I am made to understand that Syed Saddiq called Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador to inform him of what was happening.
“And about 15 minutes later, the chief of the police station and several uniformed personnel entered the site,” Abdul Hannaan Khairy had said in a statement.
Hamid today said Ayob’s new role would give him more exposure after his experience as the principal assistant director at Bukit Aman’s Counter Terrorism Division (E8), which he has held since 2016.
Hamid added that Kamarudin’s expertise in cyber crimes would come in handy in his new position.
“So it (Kamarudin’s transfer) is timely.”
