KOTA KINABALU: A man who violently attacked his wife was arrested in Penampang near here after a video of the alleged assault went viral on social media.

In the five-minute clip, the man could be seen dragging the woman out of their house and grabbing her by her hair.

Another woman, believed to be the woman’s mother, tries to stop the man, hitting him with what appeared to be a plastic bottle but was ignored by the man.

Soon after, the man was seen kicking the woman in the face, causing her to drop to the ground.





When the older mother tries to stop him, he threatens to kick her.

Penampang police chief Haris Ibrahim said a report was lodged at 11 last night and police detained the 35-year-old man at the village at 9am today.

Based on initial investigations, he said the man became upset after his 34-year-old wife went to a relative’s birthday bash without informing him.

“The man and the wife had been living separately since last October,” he said when contacted.

He added the video had gone viral on WhatsApp and Facebook this morning.

Haris said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and under the Domestic Violence Act 1994.

GEORGE TOWN: A Chinese New Year celebration for a young family of three turned tragic when their vehicle crashed and burned at the North-South Expressway (PLUS) near Bertam, in Penang, this morning.

Yeap Boon Kwan, 23, and his daughter Yeap Jing Xuan, three, were burnt alive.

Boon Kwan’s wife Chan Sin Yee, 29, had minor injuries after she was thrown out of the car.

In the 10am incident, police said the Toyota Vellfire appeared to have gone out of control and crashed into a divider at KM120 (northbound) between the Bertam and Sg Petani (South) exits.

Witnesses told police that the car caught fire upon impact and a woman was thrown out of the car.

In a video shot by another motorist in the opposite direction, a woman was seen standing next to the police in the middle of the highway, gesturing for help.

North Seberang Perai police chief Nor Zainy Mohd Noor said Chan was sent to the Kepala Batas Hospital for treatment.

The remains of Boon Kwan and his daughter were also brought to the same hospital for a post-mortem.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador says he is working on resolving the case of Indira Gandhi ‘missing’ daughter.

SEPANG: Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador today said he knows the whereabouts of the daughter of Indira Gandhi, the Hindu woman who was awarded custody of the child who was taken away by her former husband.

“People don’t know where she is. I know where she is, that’s why an initiative is ongoing to negotiate (on the case).

“Let’s resolve this, so that she can stay in this country and receive an education.

“There’s no need to hide, come forward,” he told Muhammad Ridhuan Abdullah.





Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of an event here, Hamid said they were working on arranging a meeting between the two parents and resolving the problem as they both have rights according to the law.

He stressed that it was more important that the welfare of the child, Prasana Diksa, who was 11 months old when Ridhuan took her away 10 years ago, was ensured.

He said he was also concerned about the emotions of the mother, who has not seen her daughter for so long, adding that “I understand that”.

“God-willing, I can’t say if (the matter can be resolved) in one or two months, but I’m working towards it. So, be a little more patient.”

Hamid also said he had no problems if the Indira Gandhi Action Team (Ingat) decides to file a RM100 million suit against him for failing to explain why the girl could not be located.

“It’s their right to sue me or the government. That’s up to them,” he said.



Indira’s lawyers yesterday questioned why Hamid was looking for a “win-win solution”, saying there was already a Federal Court order requiring the IGP and the police to arrest Ridhuan and return Prasana to her.

Indira was awarded custody of Prasana but the girl was taken away by her ex-husband.

He had converted to Islam in 2009 before converting their three children without her consent – a move the Federal Court declared unlawful in 2018.

The Federal Court issued an order in 2016 for the police to arrest Ridhuan and return Prasana to her mother.

On Tuesday, Ingat threatened a RM100 million suit against Hamid if the police failed to explain why Prasana could not be located and reunited with her mother.

KUALA LUMPUR: A storekeeper pleaded not guilty to the charge of allegedly giving support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terror group at the High Court on Friday (Jan 31).

The 26-year-old was charged with giving support to LTTE on Facebook using the account Tamilarasan Sivam.

He allegedly committed the offence at the Bukit Aman Special Branch Investigations Division E8 (M) Counter-Terrorism Office on Jan 11,2019, at about 10am.


He was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a life sentence or imprisonment for a maximum of 30 years or a fine and the seizure of any possessions that were intended for use or used in the offence, upon conviction.

Justice Mohd Nazlan set Sept 21,22,23,28, and 29 for Thanagaraj's trial and set Feb 20 for case mention and submission of documents.

Thanagaraj also faces two other charges for possession of items linked to the terror group.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aliff Asraf Anuar Sharuddin stood for the prosecution, while RT Rajasegakaran and M. Yoges represented Thanagaraj.

Meanwhile, Justice Mohd Nazlan set Feb 28 for the next mention date for Seremban Jaya DAP assemblyman P. Gunasekaran, who is facing charges for activities related to LTTE.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Rohaiza Abd Rahman also informed the court that prosecution have handed most of the documents related to the case to the defence.

DPP Rohaiza, however, told the court that an expert report on items related to the case was still pending, as the prosecution was still waiting for the report from the expert in Singapore.

Sangeet Kaur Deo and Harshaan Zamani represented the 60-year-old assemblyman.

PUTRAJAYA: English will once again be used to teach Math and Science, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The acting Education Minister said the use of English and mastery of the language in our education system must be promoted.

"It is very important that we give time for English, particularly in learning Science and Math.


"Geography and History can come in any language but Math and Science are not indigenous fields of knowledge (to us). It comes from abroad.

"And most of it comes to us in English, therefore we are going to use English in the teaching of Science and Math," he said, adding that those who studied Science in Bahasa Melayu later found it difficult to work where English was required.

He was speaking during a special meeting with Education Ministry management officials Thursday (Jan 30).

A video of his address was later uploaded on social media.

The Teaching and Learning of Science and Maths in English (or better known by its Malay acronym, PPSMI) was introduced in phases, beginning with Year One, Form One and Lower Six students in 2003 under Dr Mahathir's first tenure as prime minister. It was abolished in 2013.

Dr Mahathir said the country and rakyat want to see reforms in the education system.

"I have ideas for the role of education in the country and towards this end, certain weaknesses have to be attended to.

"I wish to put my views on record so that we can work together to achieve it.

"Of course, my views are not always popular or acceptable to many people but I feel we have to push certain things so that our children grow up and are able to tackle the problems of adult life – that is the purpose of education."

He said being a multi-racial country posed some problems but it could also contribute to the nation's development.

Much of Malaysia's development is based on the good working relationship between the races, he said.

"If the country is not stable – if we are at war – you can forget about development.

"Everything will be concentrated on how to kill each other and the killers will be the winners," he said.

SEREMBAN: A special meeting on the awarding of state titles and honours held at Istana Besar Seri Menanti has decided to rescind a decision to bestow the Darjah Setia Bakti Negeri Sembilan (DBNS) to RITZ Corporate Holding Bhd managing director Ibrahim Yahaya.

Negri Sembilan Registrar of Awards Datuk Dr Razali Ab Malik, who is also state secretary, said the decision was made on Wednesday (Jan 29) after a meeting at the palace.


Ibrahim was awarded the DBNS, which carries the title Datuk, on Jan 14 in conjunction with the 72nd birthday of state ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

Razali said the decision was taken to safeguard the Negri Sembilan royal institution.


On Thursday (Jan 30), the ruler's private secretary Mohd Nizam Mohd Akhir, in a statement, said the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan was not the patron of RITZ Corporate Holding.

He said Tuanku Muhriz never gave his consent to be the company patron.

"The company had never made any application seeking Tuanku Muhriz's consent to become its patron.

"As such, any institution or individual contacted by anyone regarding the above should lodge a police report as it is fraud," he said.

SHANGHAI (Reuters): Health authorities in Hubei, the Chinese province at the centre of the coronavirus epidemic, said on Friday that deaths from the disease had risen to 204, a sharp increase that underscores concerns about the virus from global health officials.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said late Thursday that it was declaring the outbreak a global emergency, as cases spread to at least 18 countries.


The latest Hubei figures take the total death toll for China to at least 212. China's National Health Commission is expected to release new national figures later on Friday.

There have been a further 1,220 cases detected in Hubei by end of Jan. 30, taking the total for the province alone to close to 6,000, Hubei's health commission said.

Nearly 100 cases have emerged in other countries, spurring cuts to travel, outbreaks of anti-China sentiment in some places, and a surge in demand for protective face masks.

In Hubei some 60 million people are living under virtual lockdown as China seeks to contain the epidemic.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, praised China's response in a news conference in Geneva on Thursday evening but said the WHO was concerned about the virus spreading to countries that did not have the resources to deal with it.

"The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China but because of what is happening in other countries. Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems," he said.

The WHO move will trigger tighter containment and information-sharing guidelines to all countries, but may disappoint Beijing, which had expressed confidence it can beat the "devil" virus.

China's U.N. ambassador, Zhang Jun, said Beijing was assessing the declaration.

"We are still at a very critical stage in fighting the coronavirus. International solidarity is extremely important and for that purpose all countries should behave in a... responsible manner," Zhang said. - Reuters

PETALING JAYA: A bank clerk is the latest person to be questioned for spreading fake news about the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov).

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the 28-year-old woman was picked up in Kuantan around 4pm on Thursday (Jan 30) for allegedly posting fake news about the Wuhan virus on Facebook on Monday (Jan 27).


In a statement, MCMC said the woman's mobile phone and SIM card were also taken as evidence.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.


If convicted, the suspect could be fined up to RM50,000 or serve a year in jail or both.

An additional RM1,000 fine could also be imposed for each day the fake news is spread after conviction.

According to MCMC, the communications industry regulator and police have arrested six people for spreading fake news about the virus since Jan 28.

Besides the ability of movies have to entertain audiences, the medium has a distinct ability to provoke and inform as well. For the time being, people all over the world are following the news about the recent coronavirus outbreak. The fear-inducing television broadcasts and headlines seem to be reminding cinephiles of Steven Soderbergh’s movie Contagion considering the over eight-year-old thriller has surged to the front of the iTunes charts in the past week.


2011’s Contagion became the No. 10 most sold movie on iTunes on Tuesday following a Google search spike surrounding the film in the past week. Interest for the movie rose 89% since January 20 (per Google Trends) as over 6000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide.


As of Wednesday, Contagion has dropped to No. 15, but it’s certainly holding its own among recent releases in the top 20, such as Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Doctor Sleep and Hustlers along with award season contenders Parasite and Joker.


The ensemble sci-fi thriller starring Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and Kate Winslet follows Gwyneth Paltrow’s Beth as she returns to the United States from China with a deadly virus she passes off as jet lag. Within 24 hours, Beth and her son die from the virus, leaving Matt Damon’s husband/father character helpless and devastated.


Contagion then follows the global crisis as it continues to affect people and wreak havoc across the world as epidemiologists try to find a cure. Five cases of coronavirus were recently confirmed in the United States in Chicago, Illinois; Everett, Washington; and Phoenix, Arizona, along with in Orange and Los Angeles County, California.


The five affected are in isolation in hospitals, and the CDC and airports across the U.S. are attempting to control the situation from escalating. The coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China, and has already killed over 100 people.


Patients of the virus should have a fever, cough, difficulty breathing and either recent travel from the Chinese city or contact with a suspected or confirmed case. Symptoms can surface between two to 14 days of exposure. China’s movie theaters have already shut down following the outbreak during a hefty box office weekend for the county. Disney Parks also temporarily closed its parks in Shanghai and Hong Kong.


Contagion opened in September 2011 to positive reviews and a global box office haul of $136.5 million. Warner Bros and Participant Media launched a social awareness campaign in concert with the film’s release about taking steps to avoid catching a virus. The film’s marketing included anxiety-inducing tag lines on its posters such as “Nothing spreads like fear” and “Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t touch anyone.”


Contagion is currently available to buy and rent on iTunes, Amazon and so forth.

SERDANG: A man was arrested while beating up another man with a steel rod in front of a car showroom in Pusat Bandar Puchong here.

The victim was closing up shop for the day when the assailant attacked him around 5pm on Jan 24.


Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Ismadi Borhan. - BernamaSerdang OCPD Asst Comm Ismadi Borhan said the assailant snatched the victim's bag filled with work documents.

"However, policemen on patrol from the Puchong Jaya police station saw the commotion and intervened.


"They arrested the suspect and another accomplice at the scene," he said on Thursday (Jan 30).

Further investigations led to the arrest of another man in Kuala Lumpur, he added.

"We believe the attack was motivated by business rivalry," he said, adding that the two arrested men have been remanded until Feb 3 and the third until Feb 4.

ACP Ismadi said police were still conducting their probe and would forward the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor soon.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Eight men were charged at the Magistrate's Court here with trafficking close to 5kg of methamphetamine.

Ooi Chieng Sim, 51, a company chairman; Jackson Boh Khim Hean, 33; together with five Myanmar men and a Chinese national were charged with trafficking 4,980g of methamphetamine at a warehouse in Prai on Jan 16.


The five Myanmar men are Aung Soe Thu, Soe Min Aung, Aung Kyaw Thu, Than Zaw Oo and Tun Ye, while the Chinese national was identified as Wang Yong.

They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death penalty if convicted.


The charges were read out to the accused before Magistrate Sri Pracha Nanthini Balabedha on Thursday (Jan 30). No pleas were recorded.

Ooi, Boh and Wang understood the charges, while the five Myanmar nationals did not when the charges were read out to them.

Sri Pracha set Feb 18 for case mention pending a chemist's report and for an interpreter to read the charges to the Myanmar nationals. No bail was offered.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kalaivaanan Murty prosecuted.
