SEPANG: Indonesian rider Afridza Munandar (pic) passed away after a race incident in the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (IATC) race at Sepang International Circuit.

The incident occurred at Turn 10 on the first lap and the race was red flagged immediately.

The 20-year-old first received medical attention by the side of the track before being transferred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital by helicopter.

Despite the best efforts of circuit medical staff and those at the hospital, Munandar succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Munandar was a standout rider in the IATC season so far, taking two wins, two second places and two third-place finishes.

IATC is the support race for the Malaysia GP, and his death is the second fatality in the history of the Malaysia GP.

Italian rider Marco Simoncelli died in the 2011 edition of the Malaysia GP after he was run over during the race.
