SIBU: A 22-year-old jobless man was sentenced to 15 years in prison and four strokes of the rotan by a Sessions Court here on Friday (Nov 1) after he pleaded guilty to raping and robbing a hotel staff.

Obrayain Mccertny was jailed seven years and given two lashes of the rotan for the rape charge and slapped with an imprisonment term of eight years and another two strokes of the cane for robbery.


Mccertny pleaded guilty to both charges and was ordered by Judge Caroline Bee Majanio to serve the two sentences separately.

He had earlier confessed to raping the 25-year-old woman under Section 376 of the Penal Code at 6.07am on October 24 in a rented room in Jalan Tan Sri here.


Mccertny also admitted to robbing the woman of her belongings, including a handphone, an iron, black handbags and a stash of foreign currencies, as well as causing her injuries.

He was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code for the offence.

According to the facts of the case, the woman had that day gone to switch on the electricity on the main switchboard after she woke up to find her room in darkness.

Upon entering her room, Mccertny was waiting behind the door and then strangled her until she fell unconscious.

When she regained consciousness, she saw Mccertny unloading her belongings. The victim also found herself half naked and her hands tied with a rope.

After successfully putting on her pants, the victim opened a window and screamed for help, causing Mccertny to flee.

The victim then jumped out of the window, causing injuries to herself. She was later helped by a member of the public who contacted the police.

At about 11am that same day, the police managed to arrest Mccertny at a hotel in Jalan Pahlawan as he was trying to escape from the back window of the hotel bathroom.
