SIGC reverses decision on banning alcohol with immediate effect

SEREMBAN: The decision not to serve and sell beer at the 18-hole Seremban International Golf Club has been revoked, after members successfully challenged and voted against the decision of the club management during an extraordinary meeting held on Sunday (March 24) night.
The meeting also decided that the club can start selling beers with immediate effect.
Some 135 members attended the meeting that was chaired by state secretary and club deputy president, Datuk Dr Razali Ab Malik.
Club member V. Manimaran said the meeting, which lasted less than 30minutes, was cordial.
"Our representative told the deputy president that the decision by the management to ban the sale of beers at the club was simply against the club’s constitution.
"Almost all members then voted to lift the ban," he said.
"We are happy that justice has been served.”
Apart from violating the club’s decades-old practice of selling and serving beer, the members claimed the decision was made against the will of the majority of the club's some 1,500 members.
He said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who is club president, did not attend the meeting. The members had requisitioned an EGM, following the management's decision to ban the sale of beer at the club.
On Thursday (March 21), Aminuddin threatened to resign as president if members voted to overturn a decision of its management to stop the sale of beer at the premises.
Aminuddin said he cannot be helming a club which sold and served beer to its members and patrons, when he was also state Islamic Affairs committee head.
"I will have to resign if the decision of the management committee is overturned. "I have no problem with that, as I do not play golf," he said.
Aminuddin said he cannot be president of the club if it continued selling beer, as the course was located in an area where almost all the residents were Muslims.
He also admitted proposing to the management committee to stop the sale of beer.
The course is owned by the state government, while the clubhouse and other facilities belong to its members.
