PUTRAJAYA: A fake statement purportedly by Pakatan Harapan leaders has been criticised as being “aimed at creating tension” following Nurul Izzah Anwar’s interview with a Singapore newspaper yesterday.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the statement was “fake news”.

“I have reached out to the other party secretaries-general, and I found that there was no such statement,” he said. “This is fake news aimed at creating tension within the coalition.”

The fake statement was purportedly signed by the secretaries of PKR, DAP, PPBM and Amanah and the Pakatan Harapan Secretariat, and had declared the coalition’s continued support of the leadership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is PH chairman.

Nurul Izzah, in an interview with the Straits Times of Singapore, had been quoted as being critical of Dr Mahathir.

Saifuddin said he would speak to Nurul Izzah to find out “the actual story behind the interview”.

“I know Izzah and she has her own stand on every matter, why she chose to make an open admission,” Saifuddin said.

The interview came two days after Nurul Izzah, MP for Permatang Pauh, resigned as a member of the Public Accounts Committee and said her current term as MP would be her last.

Saifuddin said he respected her stand, as a three-term MP. “She has her reasons and views on why the PAC (Public Accounts Committee) chairman needs to be someone from the opposition parties,” he said.

Nurul Izzah had said in the interview that she was “broken hearted” at having to once again work with Dr Mahathir, describing him as a “former dictator who wreaked so much damage” on the country.
