KOTA KINABALU: Police had to step in after an argument between PKR’s deputy president candidate Rafizi Ramli and a group of party members in Keningau descended into fights, with some turning violent and breaking into the polling centre where the voting process was going on.

Rafizi was earlier explaining something to a woman inside the polling centre, when some men jeered at him.

When Rafizi attempted to confront a man who shouted expletives at him, his supporters outside the venue shouted at the group in his defence.

Things took a turn for the worse when some men forced their way into the polling centre, ripping apart a wire mesh built onto the wooden wall of the building.

Moments later, several police officers tried to apprehend a suspect after he threw something at the crowd inside the building.

Rafizi was later escorted away by about 50 of his followers from the venue as some threw insults at him.

A party source said Rafizi was “punched” from the back after he confronted the group arguing with him earlier.

The source however denied reports that the Keningau and Tawau results had been cancelled.

It is understood Rafizi would be lodging a police report.

Meanwhile, polling in another 10 divisions went smoothly and results have begun to trickle in from the east coast.

So far, Rafizi’s rival, Mohamed Azmin Ali, has won in three divisions in the east coast of Sabah, but Rafizi took Tuaran. Results from other divisions have not been confirmed yet.
