PARIT BUNTAR: The government plans to introduce a mechanism that can make ex-husbands pay alimony to their ex-wives as decided by the Shariah Court after divorce.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the move was aimed at helping divorced women whose ex-husbands refused to make alimony payments.

He said the mechanism would enable the Shariah Judiciary Department to claim from the men’s Employees Provident Fund or bank accounts to pay alimony to their ex-wives upon the decision of the Shariah Court.

The minister said the department’s Family Support Division (BSK) would give the ex-husbands a grace period of six months after the court’s decision to pay their ex-wives.

“Within the six-month period, if the women do not receive alimony payments, legal action will be taken against the ex-husbands,” he said after a meeting with farmers in Tanjung Piandang near here yesterday.

He added that he would meet with the BSK on Monday to discuss the matter.
