LUMUT: Was a deputy minister wearing a Communist uniform as claimed on social media?
The answer is no.
A picture of Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong inspecting a guard of honour made up of Armed Forces officers is making its round on social media, in which it was claimed that the senator was wearing a Communist uniform.
This allegation is false as according to Liew, he was wearing the Defence Ministry's corporate outfit. He pointed out that the corporate attire had also been worn by Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu.
"That is the ministry's corporate attire... Defence Ministry wore it, I wore it too.
"One of the reasons in wearing the corporate attire instead of a military outfit is because we are civilians so we do not want to wear military outfits," he informed.
Liew said this at a press conference at the Royal Malaysian Navy's Boustead Naval Shipyard, here, today.
In the viral photo, the caption read, "Today, on purpose, the deputy defence minister wore a Communist uniform in front of Malay soldiers, this is rude."
Liew further explained that the corporate attire has been in use for a long time.
"Perhaps previously the minister used to wear military outfits, so many do not know of the corporate attire to an extent it became an issue.
"I don't know who brought this issue up and I don't understand," he said. © New Straits Times Press
