UPDATE (AUG 20):

Hantu Kak Limah (HKL) is laughing all the way to the bank, earning RM20.5mil in ticket collection in just 11 days. HKL is now the highest earning local movie of all time, bumping Abang Long Fadil 2, which earned RM19.04mil in 28 days, off the top spot.

While it was expected that Hantu Kak Limah – the fourth movie set in Kampung Pisang, and the third one revolving around Kak Limah – was going to be a juggernaut hit, it’s still a surprise to see the opening numbers.

For its sneak preview (Aug 8) alone, it collected RM650,000, which it followed with an earning of RM1.8mil upon its general release on Aug 9.

As of Aug 12, Hantu Kak Limah has earned RM9mil at the box-office from screenings in Malaysia and Brunei.

The horror-comedy sits pretty at No.1 at the Top 10 movies in GSC cinemas (for weekend Aug 10-Aug 12), beating the international movie The Meg which also opened on Aug 9.

The film series – which includes Zombi Kampung Pisang, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah and Husin, Mon Dan Jin Pakai Toncit – have done quite well over the years. The 2010 film Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah raked in RM7.9mil in ticket sales.

In the Star2.com review, journalist Kenneth Chaw wrote: “The success of the films have to do with director Mamat’s ability to write simple-hearted, everyday characters and let the humour fall naturally off their lips.”

The film stars Awie, Delimawati, Rab Khalid, TJ Isa, Sharwani, Ropie, Zul Ariffin and Uqasha Senrose. It is showing at 137 cinemas in Malaysia and Brunei. Hantu Kak Limah opens in Singapore on Aug 16.
