Defence Deputy Minister urges Barisan Nasional to support the (SST) Bills that will be tabled in the Dewan Negara tomorrow morning

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong has urged Opposition senators to support Pakatan Harapan’s bid to reintroduce the Sales and Service Tax (SST) Bills when it reaches the Dewan Negara on Monday (Aug 20).

“I urge Barisan Nasional to support the (SST) Bills that will be tabled in the Dewan Negara tomorrow morning by the Finance Minister.

“Support us so the Government can implement the SST on Sept 1. It is important for us to implement the SST so we can collect taxes required to fund government programmes,” he said.

Liew was speaking reporters when met after launching the Warriors Challenge 3.0 by the National Defence University of Malaysia at Dataran DBKL on Sunday (Aug 19).

“I think we will know when we cross the bridge. Hopefully that answers your question.

“But we hope that the Senators in the Dewan Negara will respect the mandate given to Pakatan and facilitate the passing of those Bills,” said Liew, who’s also a Senator.

At present, Opposition senators make up the majority of the Senate, with 32 Barisan Nasional and three PAS senators, out of 55 in the Dewan Negara.

Speculation is rife that Opposition senators may decide to vote against Pakatan’s bid to reintroduce the SST on Monday.

In the event if the SST isn’t passed at the Dewan Negara, the implementation of the SST could be delayed between 10 and 14 days from Sept 1.The Sales Tax Bill 2018 was passed on Tuesday (Aug 14) while the Service Tax Bill 2018 was passed on Wednesday (Aug 15) by the Dewan Rakyat
