JOHOR BARU: A 54-year old man who was withdrawing money from an automated teller machine was assaulted and robbed here earlier today.
The victim, identified only as Mr Ho from Masai, had just withdrawn money from a bank's ATM in Taman Perling when the suspected robber struck him from behind with a metal wrench.
Ho suffered injuries to the back of his head.
Fortunately, a team of police personnel happened to be patrolling the area at the time, and were able to apprehend the suspect as he tried to flee with the victim’s money and bank card.
According to Johor Baru North police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Taib Ahmad, the police overheard the victim’s cries for help, and quickly moved in to arrest the 30 year-old suspect.
"Despite a minor scuffle while the suspect resisted arrest, my men managed to apprehend him," he said.
Taib said the suspect then led police to his vehicle, in which police found a packet of ketamine and Eramin 5 pills.
"The victim was rushed to the hospital for his head injuries," said Taib, adding that the suspect is currently being remanded pending completion of the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt while committing robbery.
