KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) has appointed Peter Bellew as the new group managing director and CEO of Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) in place of Christoph Mueller.
Bellew, who is currently the chief operating officer, begins his term from tomorrow, July 1.
MAG owns the carrier and this appointment of Bellew confirms a StarBiz report that appeared on April 23 and again on June 29.
MAG said Bellew’s appointment as the new group MD and CEO will ensure continuity in the execution of the MAS turnaround plan and further progress of the overall restructuring effort as set out by Khazanah Nasional Bhd in its 12-point MAS Recovery Plan.
It also allows for an accelerated and seamless leadership transition from Mueller.
Khazanah controls 100% of MAG.
Bellew has over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry and he joined MAS from Ryanair Ltd on September 1 last year. He was appointed MAS executive director recently.
MAG and MAB chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Md Yusof said: “Peter has been a key figure in the airline’s senior management team responsible for executing the biggest and fastest transformation in our history.
“Peter’s appointment will pave the way for a smooth transition to ensure the continued success of our national airline. I would like to thank Christoph for all the work begun under his leadership, which has seen the airline set on a path towards reclaiming its position among the world’s leading airlines.’’

The Minimum Wages Order 2016, RM1,000 per month for Pen. Malaysia, and RM920 for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, takes effect tomorrow July 1
PUTRAJAYA: The Minimum Wages Order 2016, that is RM1,000 per month for Peninsular Malaysia, and RM920 for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, will take effect tomorrow (July 1) without any delay, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem (pic).
He said claims that employers did not have sufficient time to start paying the new minimum wage from the date, were unfounded.
Riot said allegations that the country’s current economic situation was not good, was also inaccurate, as various indicators such as the labour productivity growth for 2015 showed an increase to RM75,538, from RM73,091 in 2014.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for 2015 also saw a positive increase to RM43,435mil from RM35,600mil in 2014, he said.
“In setting the new minimum wage, the government had reviewed all the recommendations of the National Wages Consultative Council (NWCC) and adopted a ‘balanced approach’ to take into account the interests of both employers and workers, as well as the national economy,” he said in a statement here Thursday.
The new minimum wage was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling Budget 2016 at the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 23, 2015.
Riot said the ministry had informed the public of the change through various channels, including via various engagement programmes held across the country throughout the month of June, to raise awareness among employers and trade unions about the matter.
He said the Labour Department would also ensure employers complied with the enforcement of the new minimum wage.
“Any party which fails to comply with the order, if convicted, can be fined up to RM10,000 for each offence and RM1,000 per day for a continuing offence under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011.
“Employers who are repeat offenders may face penalties of up to RM20,000 or five years’ jail, or both,” he said.
Riot said the implementation of the new minimum wage covered all employers including the hospitality sector, and their employers were required to pay a minimum base salary (without any element of service charge) of not less than RM1,000 a month in the Peninsular Malaysia and RM920 per month for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
He said employers in labour intensive industries were also encouraged to move towards mechanisation and automation of production processes to improve productivity and reduce dependence on unskilled foreign workers.
“The government is confident that this minimum wage policy would boost labour income and help improve the economy in achieving the high-income developed nation status, by 2020,” he said.
More information on the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order 2016 can be obtained from the NWCC secretariat at 03-88865156, or via email at minimumwages@mohr.gov.my or by visiting any Labour Office nearby. – Bernama
President Duterte Sworn In as the Philippines 16th President
MANILA: Authoritarian firebrand Rodrigo Duterte was on Thursday (Jun 29) sworn in as Philippine President, promising a ruthless and deeply controversial war on crime as the chief focus of his six-year term.
Defying convention, Duterte took his oath before a small audience inside the Malacanang presidential palace, instead of at a big public rally like previous Filipino leaders.
"No leader however strong can succeed at anything of national importance and significance unless he has the support and cooperation of the people he is tasked to lead," Duterte said after being sworn in.
His anti-crime programme includes plans to reintroduce the death penalty, issuing shoot-to-kill orders to the security services and offering them bounties for the bodies of drug dealers. He has also told ordinary Filipinos to kill suspected criminals.
A lawyer who cut his teeth as long-time mayor of the major southern city of Davao, Duterte, 71, has said another central element of his law-and-order platform is to curb social freedoms with night curfews for children and a ban on alcohol sales after midnight.
The foul-mouthed politician's style is a sharp departure from that of the laid-back Benigno Aquino, the outgoing leader of the Southeast Asian nation of about 100 million people.
Duterte won last month's presidential elections in a landslide after an inflammatory campaign in which he promised that tens of thousands of criminals would die and that fish in Manila Bay would grow fat on bodies dumped there.
His campaign also relentlessly highlighted the alleged failures of Aquino, who delivered the highest rates of economic growth in decades, but failed to stem worsening traffic gridlock, high crime and the widespread poverty endured by many Filipinos.
Even before his term began, Duterte picked fights with the envoys of key allies the United States and Australia over his joke about raping an Australian missionary who was sexually assaulted and shot dead in a prison riot.
After being elected, his controversial comments that some of the scores of Filipino journalists murdered over the past 30 years had deserved to die earned a rare rebuke from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Duterte has been accused of links to vigilante death squads in Davao, which rights groups say have killed more than 1,000 people. Such groups are concerned that extrajudicial killings could spread across the Philippines under Duterte.
With Duterte's encouragement, police have already killed dozens of suspected criminals since the May 9 election. The incoming mayor of Cebu, the Philippines' second-biggest city, has also paid out Duterte-style bounties to police for killing drug suspects.
Behind the fireworks of his rhetoric and the war on crime, Duterte has promised a raft of other far-reaching reforms.
Chief among those is to change the centralised government to a federal system in which newly created states would have a large degree of autonomy. Those states would also be able to keep most of their revenues.
But doing so will require rewriting the constitution. Duterte has also said he can end decades-old Muslim and communist rebellions, which have claimed tens of thousands of lives. Peace talks with the communists are set to start this month. He expects federalism will appease Muslim rebels, who want autonomy.

Durian on the Menu!, at the Inaugural of President Duterte The 16th Philippines President
Durian tartlet, kesong puti in Duterte inauguration menu
As for drinks, President-elect Duterte's guests will be served dalandan juice and pine-mango cooler, says a member of the inauguration organizing committee
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – With the presidential inauguration 3 days away, organizers have finalized the food to be served to guests.
Only 5 types of food will be served to the guests of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, including the diplomats, inauguration organizing committee member Liset Marquez told Rappler on Monday, June 27.
Here is the menu from caterer Via Mare:
- Monggo soup, smoked fish with alugbati in demitasse cups
- Pandesal with kesong puti and Vigan longganisa grilled on the spot
- Lumpia ubod pouch
- Durian tartlet
- Fried saba using Carbava banana
For drinks, guests will be served dalandan juice and pine-mango cooler.
Marquez said the 5 items were chosen by the inauguration committee from a much longer list provided by Malacañang Palace caterer Via Mare.
The longer menu included dishes like "petite inasal na manok skewers" and "mini choco sotanghon lumpia."
The committee chose only 5 out of the items suggested by Via Mare because of Duterte's directive to keep the event simple, said Marquez.
Mongo soup is among Duterte's favorite dishes while durian is a Davao City specialty.
Marquez said that to make do with the limited types of food to be served, the committee asked the caterer to just provide bigger servings of each dish. For instance, they asked that the demitasse cups for the monggo soup be larger than usual.
The same 5 dishes will be served to Duterte and diplomats during the diplomatic reception that will be held after his oath-taking and the mass oath-taking of Cabinet members.
Marquez said that, unfortunately, Duterte will be eating with the diplomats at the Presidential Hall and not with the rest of his guests who will be eating at the Heroes’ Hall.
As the inauguration menu took shape, there were also reports of maruya and buko juice being among the possible food choices. – Rappler.com

Ibrahimovic is likely to become new manager Jose Mourinho’s second signing after the £30m arrival of Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly
Mourinho wants to add two more players to his squad with a second bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Henrik Mkhitaryan under serious consideration.
United have offered an improved bid believed to be around £26m for the 27-year-old playmaker, and are awaiting an answer from the German club.
Speaking about their Armenian No 10, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke admitted that they were considering an improved offer from Manchester.
Former United midfielder Paul Pogba is also on Mourinho’s radar, although whether the club can force Juventus to sell the dynamic Frenchman remains to be seen.

Seseorang berjanji untuk 'sponsor makanan 100 orang anak yatim bila tiba masa buka puasa makanan tak sampai bila call telefon tak diangkat

"Indian Couple" Threatens to sue Movida Owner for implying the attack was targeted towards him and his wife.
Movida owner sings different tune following lawsuit threat
FMT Reporters | June 29, 2016
FREE MALAYSIA TODAY
Roger Hew is now saying it is best to leave the authorities to ascertain the cause of the grenade attack at his nightspot.
PETALING JAYA: Just a day after alleging on Facebook that an Indian couple was the reason behind the Puchong grenade attack early yesterday morning, Movida bar owner Roger Hew is now denying he was playing the blame game with his earlier post.
This comes hours after FMT ran an interview with one of the victims injured in yesterday’s blast, S Jaiseelan, who threatened to take legal action against Hew for implying the attack was targeted towards him and his wife.
Jaiseelan said he and his wife were the only “Indian couple” that fit Hew’s description at the premises when the attack occurred.
In his posting yesterday, Hew had said: “…preliminary investigations of the incident showed that it involved two patrons, an Indian couple, who were targeted due to personal matters”. Hew also claimed an eyewitness saw two Indian men throwing an explosive towards the said couple.
This differed from the version given by the victim himself, who said the grenade hit a Chinese man seated two tables away from him and his wife, before exploding.
Today however, Hew offered a different take on the matter.
When a netizen shared FMT’s interview with Jaiseelan on Hew’s Facebook wall, he responded by saying he had only posted an update of the incident “without prejudice” based on preliminary investigations between the bar management and the police.
“No one is accusing anyone until the police can some up (sic) with confirm details.”
He said the purpose of him putting up the first post was to “update friends on the matter” and said they would await updates from the authorities.
A check by FMT found that Hew has now changed the privacy settings of the two postings mentioned above, but not before screenshots of it had been snapped.
FMT also gathers that Jaiseelan’s brother Kavilan has lodged a police report against Hew, as of the time this article was written.
Jaiseelan and Bavani, both 32, were celebrating their second wedding anniversary at the Movida bar about 1.30am yesterday when a hand grenade was lobbed towards the premises, injuring eight after exploding.
Police are looking at several angles in their probe into the attack, including business rivalry, a personal dispute, and whether it was the work of a terror group.
A member of the self-styled Islamic State (Isis) has also reportedly claimed they were responsible for the attack, as it was aimed at those engaged in vice activities during the holy month of Ramadan.
This differed from the version given by the victim himself, who said the grenade hit a Chinese man seated two tables away from him and his wife, before exploding.

'He asked my 10 year old boy to send him a picture of his private parts'
NEW STRAITS TIMES
NILAI: If it wasn’t for a faulty phone camera, a paedophile would most likely have landed his hands on nude images of a 10-year-old boy.
This was disclosed by the boy’s mother, who learnt that her son had been in contact with the man via the Facebook Messenger application.
The boy’s mother, Nurulainey Ab Halim, 29, had via a Facebook post, related the incident involving her son.
She said her son had approached her and asked her on how to use the handphone camera, which had been faulty for some time.
“When I asked him what he wanted to use it for, he told me about the conversation he had with the man on Facebook.”
The man had asked the boy to snap a photo of his private parts. The man had also promised to give the boy a Sony PSP in return for the favour.
The boy, unaware of what was going on, had agreed to the request. However, the phone’s camera failed to function.
“I was shocked at seeing the man’s obscene request in the conversation with my boy. My son was too naive to know what was going on; I’m just thankful that the phone’s camera failed to work,” she said.
She said that based on the conversation, the man had likened himself to a ‘brother’ in order to gain the boy’s trust.
Nurulainey said she tried to contact the man through the Facebook call application, but to no avail.
“I then sent him messages to warn him. He hasn’t replied yet. I guess he was surprised that he was caught red-handed this time,” she said.
A copy of the conversation between the suspect and the victim was uploaded on Facebook and became viral in an instant.
“I purposely shared that on my Facebook page to warn all parents out there to be more careful with their kids’ activities on social networking sites. I hope this will be a lesson to all of us,” she said.
