AMPANG: A car sales adviser pleaded not guilty over the death of his girlfriend after she fell off a cliff at Bukit Permai here last month.
Looking flustered, Sharminder Singh Christi Anthony, 35, blurted out that he did not kill Jaspal Kaur (pix), 28.
Sharminder said it was an accident when asked by Judge Unaizah Mohd on his bail mitigation at the Sessions Court here Friday.
“I did not do anything. It was an accident,” Sharminder said repeatedly, until he had to be reminded by the judge that he was supposed to respond to his bail mitigation.
The father of two whose children, aged 8 and 11 years, was believed to have caused the death of Jaspal at Taman Bukit Permai, Bukit Permai at around 12.15pm on Oct 30.
Jaspal was believed to have died on the spot after falling from the 26m cliff during an argument with her boyfriend.
DPP Nurakmal Farhan Aziz urged the court not to allow bail considering the seriousness of the offence and the risks posed if Sharminder was allowed to be free.
"There is a possibility that the accused might run away or affect prosecution evidence if he given bail,” said Nurakmal.
In pleading for leniency, Sharminder begged for the lowest bail before the judge, saying that he was the sole breadwinner of his family and was also supporting his mother.
“Jaspal would have been my future wife, but unfortunately, an accident happened. The concrete was slippery.
“I also lost someone I loved,” said Sharminder, who was unrepresented and was going through a divorce.
No bail was granted by Judge Unaizah Mohd and she fixed Dec 7 for mention.
Sharminder was charged under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum 10 years' jail or a fine or both upon conviction.
It was reported that investigations found that Jaspal might have fallen off after she was slapped by her boyfriend in the neck during an argument.
