IPOH: Police have arrested a family in connection with the brutal murder of at least four people whose bodies were burnt and their bones dumped into a river.

The family, comprising a 57-year-old mechanic, his 54-year-old wife and their two children aged 17 and 20, were picked up by the police at their house in Tapah, some 55km from here on Oct 26.

Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said the murders were believed to have taken place between 2012 and this year.

“The suspects’ latest victim was a 46-year-old land broker, who was reported missing by his son on Aug 25 after he left his house in Kampung Sungai Lah, Chenderiang, in the morning and never returned.

“Early investigations have shown that the victim was murdered and burned at the suspects’ bus workshop which also served as the family’s home in Tapah.

“His bones and ashes were thrown into the river nearby while his motorcycle was left on the side of the road heading to Cameron Highlands,” he told journalists here yesterday.

DCP Hasnan said further investigations into the suspects revealed that they were also believed to have killed three more people and disposed of their bodies using the same method.

They were a tour bus operator, 56, who was reported missing on March 1 last year, a vehicle spare parts dealer, 54, reported missing on June 15 last year, and a 36-year-old man who was an employee of the main suspect. He was reported missing on Oct 30, 2012.

All of them were also believed to have had some problems with the suspects, involving debt, failed land sales and stolen land titles.

“A forensic team from the police and the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital conducted crime scene investigations in several areas in Tapah on Friday and Saturday.

“A few bone samples have been sent for tests,” he said.

DCP Hasnan added that the mechanic had several criminal records for breaking and entering, fraud, robbery and criminal breach of trust.

“All four suspects were remanded on Oct 27 and their remand orders have been extended to Nov 6.

“I urge those who have any information related to this case to contact their nearest police station, as we have reason to believe that there could be more victims involved,” DCP Hasnan said.
