November 17, 2015.The remaining Malaysian hostage kidnapped from Sandakan in Sabah, Bernard Then Ted Fen, has been beheaded by Abu Sayyaf militants, Singapore's Straits Times reported.
Quoting Filipino Joint Task Group Sulu commander Brigadier-General Alan Arrojado, the report said the 39-year-old Then was killed around 4pm at a secluded area, believed to be a stronghold for the militant group, on Jolo island.
Arrojado was reported as saying that Then was killed after his family "failed to comply" with demands by the militants during ongoing negotiations.
Then was kidnapped by militants in May along with Thien Nyuk Fun, from the Ocean King Seafood Restaurant in Sandakan, which the latter owned.
Thien was released last week after being held for six months in the same area in a jungle in southern Philippines.
Then's beheading comes as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrived in Philippine capital of Manila today for a two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
His body, Arrojado said, had been buried in the same area where he was beheaded and that efforts to locate the remains were ongoing.
The report said Then had been suffering from leg injuries after his kidnapping, which had been slowing down his captors.
Abu Sayyaf militants reportedly threatened to behead him after Thien was released, after some 30 million pesos (RM2.78 million) was paid for her safe release.
In August, Then's wife Chan Wai See said her husband had told her, during a phone call, that he would be beheaded next after the terrorist group had killed Filipino village official, Rodolfo Boligao, who also had been held hostage since May.
Chan and Thien's son, Chung Chin Lung, told The Malaysian Insider previously that they feared their loves ones' time was running out even as Filipino authorities had continued to sweep Jolo island to clear militants' hideouts.
This incident is the only one in a long list of similar incidents, which had taken place in the east coast of Sabah recently.
Last year, a police officer was killed and another was kidnapped in a resort off Semporna.
In June last year, a Malaysian fish breeder and a Filipino employee were abducted at their fish farm.
In April 2014, a Chinese tourist and Filipino resort worker were kidnapped from a Semporna resort.
A Taiwanese man was killed and his wife abducted in November 2013.
In all those incidents, the victims were eventually rescued. – November 17, 2015.
