NEW DELHI: Malaysia beat South Africa 2-1 for their second win in the Junior World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here on Sunday.
It took them closer to the quarterfinals with one match to go.
They play England in the final group match on Monday and a draw will be enough to take them through to the last eight.
It was South Africa who took the lead in the 13th minute through a penalty corner taken by Mathew Brown.
But the Malaysians fought back and in the 27th minute drew level when the South Africans scored an own goal. It came when Mohamed Nor Aqmal’s drive from outside the ‘D’ touched goalkeeper Rene de le Peyre and went in. It remained 1-1 at half time.
In the second half Malaysia went on the offensive and in the 42th minute took the lead with Mohamed Firhan Azhaari scoring a field goal.
South Africa also missed a penalty stroke in the 53th minute with Brown’s flick well saved by goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman to ensure Malaysia’s win.
