WASHINGTON: United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has selected Pam Bondi, a former Florida state attorney general, as the new US Attorney General, replacing Matt Gaetz who withdrew from consideration, Xinhua reported.
In an announcement made through his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump praised Bondi for her efforts to address drug trafficking and fentanyl overdose issues while serving as Florida's first female attorney general.
He also added that it was this factor that prompted him to ask Bondi to serve on the Commission on Opioids and Drug Abuse during the first Trump administration.
Bondi's nomination came the same day Matt Gaetz, Trump's previous pick for the top prosecutor, withdrew from consideration.
The controversy that has erupted in recent days over the former Florida congressman's alleged sexual misconduct has made his candidacy for attorney general so controversial that his chances of getting enough support from Republican senators in the confirmation process are slim.
