SEPANG: CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso proved his prowess as world champion for the Moto3 class when he recorded his 13th victory this season, at the 2024 Malaysian MotoGP Grand Prix (GP) at the Sepang International Circuit here today.

This incredible victory not only cemented the championship status of Alonso, who was crowned world champion last month, but also made him the first rider to record 13 wins in a single season.

The race, which took place under the scorching sun today, got off to an interesting start as David Almansa of the Kopron Rivacold Snipers Team who raced from ninth place wasted no time in sprinting to the front and leading the pack.

With 11 laps to go, Almansa was overtaken by BOE Motorsports' Joel Kelso, but the Australian could not hold on for long as Honda Team Asia's Taiyo Furusato overtook him to take the lead.

Having spent most of the race in third place, Alonso raced into second place on the eighth lap before the Colombian-born rider took first place from Furusato, and held that position to the finish line with a time of 33 minutes 03.671 seconds (s).

The 18-year-old finished ahead of Furusato by +0.088s, while Red Bull KTM Ajo's Jose Antonio Rueda (+0.411s) was third.

After completing 19 rounds of the season, Alonso now has 396 points, far behind Daniel Holgado of Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 in second place (236 points), while Collin Veijer representing Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP is in third (236 points).
