NEW YORK: Sean "Diddy" Combs was denied bail for a second time on Wednesday after the rapper and music mogul was arrested on sex-trafficking and extortion charges.
In the indictment by prosecutors, Combs is accused of using his fame to coerce women into performing sexual acts as part of a sex-trafficking and extortion scheme.
Combs, 54, pleaded not guilty in Manhattan federal court hours after the 14-page indictment was read.
The rapper and producer also used his business empire, including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment, to transport women, as well as male sex workers, across the state to take part in taped sexual performances called "Freak Offs," prosecutors said.
Combs faces up to life in prison, and a minimum of 15 years, if convicted of the three felony charges: conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution.
Prosecutors said Combs lured the women by giving them drugs such as ketamine and ecstasy, financial support, or promises of career support or romantic relationships.
Combs then used secret recordings of the sex acts as "collateral" to ensure the woman would remain silent, and sometimes displayed weapons to intimidate victims and witnesses, prosecutors said.
The indictment did not say how many women were allegedly victims.
It does not contain allegations that Combs himself was directly involved in unwanted sexual relations with the women in question.
However, he was accused of assault by punching, kicking, dragging and throwing objects at the victim.
Combs used bribery and violence such as arson and kidnapping to try to conceal his behavior, prosecutors said.
Also known as P. Diddy and Puff Daddy, Combs was the founder of the Bad Boy record label and helped such rappers and R&B singers as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious BIG and Usher become stars in the 1990s and 2000s.
