BANGKOK: A 56-year-old woman is believed to have poisoned five Vietnamese tourists with cyanide served in cups and then drank the poison herself at a luxury hotel in Bangkok, police said on Wednesday, the German News Agency (dpa) reported.
The bodies of three men and three women were found on Tuesday evening by staff in a suite at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. Preliminary inspection at the scene did not find any signs of violence and robbery.
Police said in a press conference on Wednesday that they believed one of the six tourists, two of whom also held US passports, was behind the tragedy.
"We confirmed that one in six deaths caused this incident by using cyanide.
"We are confident that one of them committed this crime," said Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau's Noppasil Poonsawas.
The victim's family confirmed that there was a dispute over money.
Police found poison residue in a cup found at the scene and investigators also found the room door locked from the inside.
The case drew widespread attention amid concerns that a bad image could damage Thailand's vital tourism sector, which is only just recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.
