PADU: Only 17% of Malaysians have registered so far
Mac 18, 2024
UNTIL 11.59pm last Saturday, only 5.22 million Malaysians had registered to the Main Database System (PADU).
This is only around 17.3% of the 30.08 million total number of Malaysians and is a relatively low number more than two months since it was launched last January.
The low number of registrations is an issue because the data collected will be used for the delivery of targeted subsidies as well as various other government initiatives.
Among the complaints heard were that it was not friendly enough for older users and that the identity verification system was slow.
Public concern about a main database that stores all information also failed to be alleviated by PADU.
Various cases of data leakage before were not taken seriously by the authorities with no action being taken, making the public's trust in data security in Malaysia quite low.
The act of keeping one's mouth shut without any official statement makes this trust even more eroded.
If PADU wants to be successful, more efforts should be made to publicize the advantages of registering.
