Malaysian Customs foils French Passenger's attempt to smuggle over 6kg of cocaine at KLIA

PUTRAJAYA: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs weighing 6.13 kilograms worth RM1.22 million hidden in luggage at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, Sepang on 9 January.

Central Zone JKDM Enforcement Operations Director Wong Pun Sian said the drugs were found in seven boxes of cosmetic products containing solid lumps like multi-colored soap in the cabin luggage belonging to a French passenger, who boarded a flight from Sao Paolo, Brazil.

He said the preliminary tests carried out on the lumps were suspected to be cocaine-type drugs.

"The modus operandi of this syndicate is to hide drugs in the form of soap with various colors in cosmetic boxes to obscure the eyes of the authorities and to be carried by 'hand carry' by passengers who are old and traveling alone into the country," he said in a statement today. .

The individual was detained to assist the investigation in accordance with Section 39B(1)(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 12 lashes if not sentenced to death, if convicted.

Wong said based on the weight of the drugs obtained, the confiscation succeeded in cracking down on drug trafficking to a total of 30,685 addicts. — BERNAMA
