KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police have given assurance that the security for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be increased, following his disclosure regarding numerous threats he received due to his outspoken advocacy for Palestine.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that the police will not compromise on this matter.

"The security of the Prime Minister is our top priority," he told Bernama.

However, Razarudin said most of the threats may be related to economic issues or other sectors, such as the country's exports.

The IGP said this in response to Anwar's disclosure that he had received multiple threats from Western countries following Malaysia's firm stand, support and commitment to defending the rights of the Palestinian people as well as criticism levelled against the Israeli government.

Anwar revealed this in his speech at the 'Malaysia Stands with Palestine Rally' held at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil last night.

The Prime Minister said as a sovereign nation, Malaysia will remain independent and continue to defend the country's freedom as well as advocate the freedom of the Palestinian people, and that he, as the head of the government, would not succumb to or be intimidated by such threats.

More than 16,000 Malaysians of various backgrounds, races and religions flocked to Axiata Arena in a show of solidarity for the Palestinian people.

Razarudin said the rally was conducted under control and involved more than 300 police personnel.
