KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified the twitter account holder who claimed that the judge presiding over the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial involving Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak is related to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director (Investigations/Legal) DCP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the individual would be called up next week to facilitate investigation into the matter.
“We will call up and record the individual’s statement next week,“ he told Bernama.
Mior Faridalathrash said the investigation paper on the case was opened following a police report lodged in Taiping, Perak yesterday.
He said the case was being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
It was reported that Bersatu member Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rahman lodged a police report in Taiping yesterday over a tweet by Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin Malaysia president Ramesh Rao.
In his tweet on Tuesday, Ramesh claimed that High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali who found Najib guilty of seven charges involving criminal breach of trust, money laundering and misuse of position, is Mahathir’s grandnephew.
Mahathir’s son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir through his twitter account refuted the allegation which he described as baseless and urged the authorities to investigate the matter.
In another development, Mior Faridalathrash said police would submit investigation papers on Bangladeshi national, Md Rayhan Kabir who was featured in a recent controversial documentary by Al Jazeera to the Attorney-General’s Chambers next week for further action.
Md Rayhan was detained in Setapak here on July 24 after the Immigration Department sought the aid of the public to track down the individual who appeared in the documentary.
Through the documentary, Md Rayhan made a statement concerning the treatment of the Malaysian authorities on illegal immigrants when the country implemented the Movement Control Order to combat the spread of Covid-19.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud was reported as saying on July 25 that the man would be deported and blacklisted from entering Malaysia forever.

“An investigation paper under Section 324 of the Penal Code has been opened. The cause of the incident is being probed and we are seeking the parties involved to come forward immediately to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.

PUTRAJAYA, July 31 -- The Election Commission (EC) was officially notified by the Sabah State Legislative Assembly yesterday regarding the dissolution of the 15th Sabah state assembly, said EC secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak.
He said according to Article 21 (4) of the Sabah State Constitution, the state election has to be held within 60 days of the date of dissolution.
"Therefore, the EC will hold a special meeting to discuss the conduct of the election,” he said in a statement here today.
Ikmalrudin said the date for the meeting would be announced later.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal had announced the dissolution of the state assembly in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 -- Malaysian YouTuber star S. Pavithra has made another video since her recent comeback but this time around, she puts down her kitchen utensils and speaks candidly about the controversy surrounding her husband’s arrest.
The five-minute YouTube video (https://youtu.be/e0orAK3iH_Y) entitled ‘Inilah sebab menjadi masalah’ (This is the source of the problems) sees the 28-year-old claiming family problems, money and the media as the reasons that ultimately led to the arrest of her husband, M. Sugu.
“Sugu went to the hospital on the day of the incident because my own family had become a problem - all due to money.
“My family, who has never helped me since I married Sugu seven years ago, suddenly appeared in my life after I had become successful and started borrowing money from my husband. This caused a lot of family problems,” she said in Malay, in the video uploaded to her channel.
She did not deny that Sugu was also partly to blame as he was drunk at the time of the incident but reiterated that he was not a drunkard.
The mother of two also claimed that media interference had caused disruption to their private lives over the past three months.
“After the media entered our lives, we no longer had privacy and found it difficult to produce more cooking videos or attend to our children. It was a difficult time for us,” she said.
She also apologised for deleting all the videos on her YouTube channel and promised to upload them again as soon as possible.
Pavithra said her husband was instrumental to her achievement as one of Malaysia’s most successful YouTube stars, adding that without Sugu, her channel would not have gained 786,000 subscribers and its videos viewed nearly 35 million times.
“You’re all aware that Sugu and I were cooking together from the very beginning. I hope you will continue supporting us as usual,” she said.
On July 20, former plantation labourer Sugu was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a sickle and was accused of hitting his wife. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 -- The Health Ministry (MOH) today announced that the term social distancing used in the standard operating procedure (SOP) to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has now been changed to physical distancing.
The use of the new term refers to the public observing a one-metre distance from each other in new habits.
"The term social distancing has now been replaced by physical distancing," the MOH said via Twitter.
In addition, the public must also comply with the conditions set under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).
Those in the high-risk category such as children, infants, the elderly and the disabled need to be protected and individuals who feel unwell and show symptoms (of COVID-19) are urgently required to undergo a health examination.
As of yesterday, there were eight new COVID-19 cases reported, bringing the infection tally in the country to 8,964 cases and the number of active cases to 223.
SINGAPORE, July 31 -- Singapore, which is into its sixth-week since the re-opening of economic and social activities, has preliminarily recorded an additional 396 cases of COVID-19 infections today, bringing the total to 52,205 cases to date.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) in its brief noon data released here said the vast majority of the cases were foreign workers staying in dormitories.
"Based on our investigations so far, there are three cases in the community, all of whom are work pass holders," said the ministry.
In addition, the ministry said there were three imported cases placed on Stay-Home Notice upon arrival in Singapore.
In the full data released late yesterday, Singapore classified 696 of reported cases as imported, 2,176 as community cases and 48,937 as dorm residents.
As at noon yesterday, 46,308 or about 90 per cent of the total cases had fully recovered from the infection and discharged from hospitals or community care facilities.
There were 148 confirmed cases still warded.
Of these, most were stable or improving, and none were in the intensive care unit.
A total of 5,326 patients with mild symptoms or clinically well but still tested positive for COVID-19 have been isolated and are being cared for at community facilities.
To date, 27 people have died from complications due to COVID-19 in Singapore.
A mobile video of a Nepali security guard in Malaysia getting beaten up by his supervisor with a truncheon has gone viral in social media, causing outrage in Nepal and its migrant worker community in Malaysia.
The video was posted on a Facebook Page called Sq Soul7 on 7 July, and shows the Nepali guard not saying anything while he is being repeatedly bludgeoned in what looks like a parking lot of an apartment block. The bystander taking the video is overheard asking the supervisor to stop, but the man is mercilessly attacked.
On Friday, the Nepal Embassy in Kuala Lumpur filed a police complaint. It has also appealed the public on social media to share any additional information they have.
Details about the perpetrator and the Nepali migrant are yet to be released. There are no details about why the Nepali was being beaten, which many commentators on social media have said is moot because nothing justifies a worker getting beaten up defenselessly.
As he beats the Nepali, the supervisor is heard saying in Bahasa Melayu: “I’m being nice to you and what do I get in return? You think you’re some big shot? What’s your problem?”
The Nepali security guard suffers silently throughout the beating, and squirming with pain.
“He is an Indian Malaysian named ‘Mannu’ who works at Alliance Security and has faced multiple cases of abuse in the past as well,” said Santosh Sapkota, Malaysia returnee now in Banepa (pictured below). “I had also been abused by him and had filed a complained at the Nepali Embassy then. With their support I was able to return five months earlier than planned after spending 3 years 7 months in Malaysia as I could no longer take the abuse.”
Sapkota said he is not sure if ‘Mannu’ worked at the same Alliance Security or if he had been transferred. He added: “You did not need any reason to be physically or verbally abused by him.”
The attention that this case is getting in the media is being taken as a positive sign it will build public opinion pressure and visibility against similar beatings and violence against migrant workers in Malaysia.
Most other attacks on migrant workers do not get visibility because there is no video, which is why the abuse has persisted. Many Nepali workers returning from Malaysia have complained of frequent physical abuse from supervisors or employers, and even of being robbed by locals who know the migrant worker will not dare go to the police.

Melburnians have been watching increasing COVID case numbers with dismay.(ABC News: Simon Winter)

Victoria has confirmed 627 new cases of coronavirus today, marking the second-highest daily increase since the pandemic began.
six local government areas around the Geelong and Colac regionshave come into effect today, and wearing face coverings will be mandatory across all of Victoria from next week. The state yesterday recorded 723 cases of COVID-19 and 13 deaths, Australia's highest daily totals since the pandemic started.
However further lockdown measures are being considered by authorities, and some medical experts have warned Victorians must prepare for the dismaying prospect of the lockdown's extension.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews held discussions last night on how to tackle the coronavirus crisis in Victoria.
The nation's Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd said the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) also met yesterday to talk about possible recommendations for additional measures.
"The number of new cases that we saw yesterday was quite alarming," he said.
"It does have to be looked at in the context of the figures over the past couple of weeks and the trend that we are seeing … which is an increase in numbers despite the restrictions which have been in place."
At this stage, no further restrictions have been confirmed and the Victorian Government says it is canvassing all options.
'Challenging times': Experts say longer lockdown likely
Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire are now more than halfway through their six-week coronavirus lockdown.
Modelling from previous shutdowns suggests the curve should be flattening, especially after the introduction of mandatory masks more than a week ago.
But after yesterday's case numbers, experts have warned Victorians to ready themselves for the likelihood of a longer lockdown.
"Stage 3 is not ending in three weeks. I can say that with 98 per cent probability," University of Melbourne epidemiologist Tony Blakely said.
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) also said Melbourne's restrictions would be needed for longer.
"It's really unlikely that we're going to be able to see any lifting of restrictions within the next three weeks," AMA president Tony Bartone said.
Professor Blakely said Victoria was facing "very challenging times".
"Seven-hundred-and-twenty-three is quite high and I was frankly quite floored by it," he said.
Calls for clothing, shoe stores to close
Professor Blakely,
He said the movement and mingling of people needed to be further curtailed.
"If you've got 'essential' industries open that aren't really that essential, it's quite likely that in two weeks time that may be where the virus is propagating," he said.
"Going hard can pay dividends down the track because you can open up sooner.
"So I would recommend at this point in time that industries that aren't really essential, footwear stores, that type of thing, are closed so we're moving to a tighter definition of what is an essential worker or essential workplace," he said.
"So that's food, healthcare, pharmacists and the aged care facilities."
However Professor Blakely said Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, in a speech to the National Press Club last week, made it clear a move to stage 4 restrictions was off the table, "making it very challenging for us".
"It means somehow we've got to get this virus down and head towards elimination, which is the national goal, without going to stage 4," Professor Blakey said.
"We've got to use really clever stage 3.
"We're in this awkward no-man's or no-woman's land at the moment whereby we can't use stage 4 to go for elimination even though that's the national goal.
"We've got to do this smart and hard stage 3."
Move to 'the next level' now, AMA urges
The AMA also wants tougher measures to restrict people's movement and a critical examination of all industries.
"Pharmacies, supermarkets, medical facilities, they clearly remain essential and it's extremely important they remain open," AMA president Tony Bartone said.
"After that we really need to produce a very strong, clear reason why we should be having any activity in that sector.
"We need to move to the next level.
"This sees a really significant curtailing to the amount of movement, reducing the amount of mixing in the community and really we need to look at the definition of what is an essential industry."
Australia's Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth said it was important to find ways to stop people who were infected or waiting for test results from going to work.
"This doesn't go away if we all go to work when we've got COVID-19," Dr Coatsworth told Radio National Drive.
Meanwhile, Professor Blakely said he would be expecting the impact of mandatory mask wearing to "kick in".
"So I don't want to be too despondent about it — nevertheless we have ongoing high numbers by Australian standards," Professor Blakely said.
He said his "most optimistic" guess would be a scenario where Victoria could get to a state of zero community transmission in six weeks, but only with "six weeks of incredibly hard lockdown" … but he also said that it could go on for up to 20 weeks.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 -- Messrs Lewis & Co, a trustee of the charity foundation Yayasan Akalbudi belonging to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, received more than RM66 million via cheques from various individuals and companies between 2016 and 2018, the High Court heard today.
An accountant from Lewis & Co, V. Sothilechmy, 67, said the law firm's owner, B. Muralidharan, had directed her to deposit the cheques into the firm’s bank account before transferring the money into two fixed deposit accounts.
“Several payments were made via the two fixed deposit accounts, among others, to purchase two land lots, as well as to Yayasan Akalbudi,” she said when reading her witness statement on the 30th day of the trial of Ahmad Zahid, who is facing criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering charges involving funds belonging to the foundation.
Messrs Lewis & Co has two partners, namely Muralidharan and V. Premshangar.
When asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Keng Fat during the examination-in-chief on whether the individuals and companies who issued the cheques of more than RM66 million were clients of Lewis & Co, the witness said “no”.
Lee: Is Datuk Seri Zahid a client of Lewis & Co?
Sothilechmy: Yes, a client of Lewis & Co.
The 85th prosecution witness also agreed with Lee that Yayasan Al-Falah belonging to a family member of Ahmad Zahid was also a client of the legal firm.
Previously, the 66th prosecution witness Faisalludin Mohamat Yusuff told the court that Ahmad Zahid had contributed RM5.9 million to Yayasan Al-Falah, in which his brother, Datuk Seri Mohamad Nasaee Ahmad Tarmizi was the board of trustees chairman, to purchase two bungalows in Country Heights, Kajang.
Ahmad Zahid, 67, is facing 27 counts of money laundering, 12 counts of criminal breach of trust involving funds belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi and eight counts of corruption.
The trial before Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah continues on Aug 10.
KOTA KINABALU, July 30 -- A convoy of almost 10 vehicles taking former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman and his entourage to the Istana Negeri to have an audience with the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, could not proceed with their journey when the road leading to the palace, at Bulatan Nanas was closed by the authorities.
The convoy believed to be carrying 33 state assemblymen who had pledged their support to Musa to form a new state government in a coalition involving several political parties, arrived near the palace entrance at about 3.50 pm.
Musa's lawyer, Tengku Fuad Tengku Ahmad was seen alighting from one of the vehicles to have a word with personnel manning the road block.
Despite the rain, the convoy of vehicles remained queued in the area, and at press time, it is understood permission to enter has still not been granted by palace officials.
The situation at the palace entrance was well under control and Kota Kinabalu district police chief ACP Habibi Majinji was also seen monitoring security there.
Earlier, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly to pave the way for state elections, to be held within 60 days.
However, Musa, when commenting on the latest development said, it was not necessary to dissolve the Sabah state legislative assembly as this would be a waste of time and money, and with COVID-19 far from over, this could endanger people’s lives.
Musa, who said he was not surprised by the announcement, claims he had secured simple majority support from 33 of the 65 assemblymen, to form a new government without having to go through fresh elections.
