UPDATES ON THE CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19)
SITUATION IN MALAYSIA
Current Status of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Who Have Recovered
8 April 2020 – The Ministry of Health (MOH) would like to inform that 166 cases have fully recovered and discharged well today. Cumulatively, 1,487 confirmed COVID-19 cases have fully recovered and discharged well (36.1% of total cumulative cases).
Current Situation of COVID-19 in Malaysia
8 April 2020, 12 pm – A total of 156 additional confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) MOH today. Cumulatively there are now 4,119 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. This also means that the number of discharged cases exceed the number of new cases reported.
Currently, 76 confirmed COVID-19 cases are receiving treatment in intensive care units (ICU), and of these, 45 cases are on ventilation support.
Regretfully, two (2) additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to the National CPRC MOH. Cumulatively, there are now 65 COVID-19 deaths in Malaysia (1.58% of total cumulative cases):
- Death #64: Case 2,903 is a 58 year-old Malaysian woman with a history of diabetes and hypertension. She was admitted into Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital, Negeri Sembilan on 30 March 2020 and was pronounced dead on 7 April 2020 at 3.20 pm.
- Death #65: Case 1,906 is a 69 year-old man, Pakistan national, with a history of diabetes. He also has a history of attending the Seri Petaling gathering. He was admitted into Kuala Lumpur Hospital on 22 March 2020 and was pronounced dead on 8 April 2020 at 9.30 am.

COVID-19 Sub-Cluster in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, Related to the Seri Petaling Gathering
MOH has found a COVID-19 sub-cluster in the Rembau District of Negeri Sembilan, related to the Seri Petaling gathering. This cluster consists of staff from a school, that subsequently spread to several localities in Rembau District (i.e. Pedas, Pilin, Kundur and Batu Hampar). As of 8 April 2020 at 12 pm, 27 individuals have been diagnosed with COVID-19, including two (2) cases receiving treatment in the ICU.
This cluster was first detected when several teachers in a school were found positive for COVID-19. The infection transmission is believed to have taken place during a school meeting that was also attended by Case 448 (index case), who participated in the Seri Petaling gathering.
The infection then spread from the affected teachers and other school staff to their family members and the local community, resulting in three generations of infection. Investigations also found that individuals were still visiting relatives who were unwell in their respective houses despite the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Health Advisory on COVID-19
MOH strongly emphasises the importance of all Malaysians in complying to all health advisories that have been issued. Every level of the society must play their respective roles responsibly. Compliance to the MCO and all health advisories is very crucial in preventing widespread infection transmission in the community.
MOH has found that unauthorised movements outside homes are still taking place, involving visits to relatives’ homes including visiting family members who are unwell, as well as those undergoing home- or self-surveillance or monitoring. For example, for Case 2,903 (Death #64), she and several others continued to travel between different states despite the enforcement of the MCO from 18 March 2020. The number of vehicles on the road have also been increasing. MOH is deeply concerned that such non-compliance by the public will only further increase the spread of COVID-19 infection.
Throughout the duration of the Movement Control Order, MOH advises the public to stay at home while practising:
- Optimal level of personal hygiene at all times, such as washing hands frequently with water and soap
- Practice social distancing at least 1 meter away from others
MOH will continue to monitor the development of the COVID-19 situation based on all available information, and the public will be continuously updated on the latest information.
